“I was cured, all right!”

Gonna watch the entire Coen brothers filmography in release order. Some films I'll rewatch, others, like this one, it will be my first time.

Edit: I'll watch this one too:

Thanks for the recommendation. I thought it was a well made film: good direction, good acting. Matt Dillon made the Bukowski-like character almost charismatic. The writer romanticised the alcoholic, making him more like a Jack Kerouac or Neal Cassady type.

The glaring error was that Dillon not only never seemed to be drunk, but he was always clear eyed and fairly clean looking-- not possible for a drunk of his type.

Lili Taylor as Dillon's fellow dipsomaniac squeeze was first rate, and seemed more true to life.

I think the story would have been better told set in the 1940s, like the book, rather than in 2005. That probably would have added a prohibitive amount of production costs though.

Dillon seems a natural at portraying druggies and drunks. He was pretty good in 1989's Drugstore Cowboy, with the redoubtable William S. Burroughs in the cast..

Thanks Doc. Yeah I hoped it might have been a bit more gritty too. Still, glad you enjoyed it, definitely worth a watch. I've actually still to visit Drugstore Cowboy, its been on my list for ages. Might do that this week actually.

I haven't seen Drugstore Cowboy in years, but I recall it being an enjoyable and refreshing film at the time. Matt Dillon was convincing in his portrayal.

William S. Burroughs was fascinating as "Tom the Priest" (a drug supplier). Burroughs in real life had been associated with the "Beat Generation". He was the grandson of the founder of the Burroughs Corporation, the famous maker of business machines, which made him independently privileged.

He was a poet and author, and was himself a drug addict. He must have gotten clean though. He lived to age 83!
