The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1932)

After Hours, strong 8 out of 10. I love movies that have a slight sense of surrealism to them, and After Hours was perfect in that aspect.

Nice review, CR. It's an enjoyable film by a bunch of pros. Redford underplayed the part perfectly, and reminded everybody that he could act a little.. As you say, good send off to a legendary guy.

Tokyo Idols (2017)



It is an exercise of bigotry of the lowest caliber. This "documentary" portrays a facet of Japanese culture as if it were some kind of disturbing activity that should not exist. Of course, it has zero objectivity and presents the concept of idol from a consistently condescending perspective. I think about this documentary as analogous to the perspective of racist Europeans when they were describing primitive African tribes: a completely arrogant perspective that sees its subject as something disgusting.

In cinematic terms is very mediocre: it feels like a poorly edited YouTube video rather than a documentary and it only interviews 2 people 90% of the time: one idol and one of her fans, as if a sample of 2 people (which might be paid artists from all I know) could describe the millions of people who participate in idol culture. Essentially a piece of ethnocentric propaganda that is an insult of the whole subculture.
