I guess it struck folks as dopey and it also came at a time when people were looking for a change to the movies. It was Brosnan's last outing, and his outings didn't draw as much love compared to other OOs. It made a lot of money, though. Too "out there" on the tech, too. I always liked it though, mostly due to the icy setting and cool car fight. It's a fun flick that I own on DVD. I haven't seen many of the older ones. Casino Royale (the one with Craig) is my favorite, but I also enjoy DAD and The World Is Not Enough (also played the PS2 game), not so much GoldenEye even though it's not a bad movie, fun game.

Dire Another Day- the worst point of the film was General Sun Moon. You'd have thought that in 2002, people wouldn't be up for sixties/seventies-era racism.

The problem was that it started off relatively dark and was then just campy nonsense, meaning that neither audience were satisfied. It was the first Bond film since 9/11 and I think people felt that it wasn't really the right time.

To be fair, it played to Brosnan's strengths as it was light-weight. I doubt he would have been able to pull off Casino Royale.

I had that attitude recently when I saw a bit of For Your Eyes Only. It couldn't decide what it wanted to be, campy or gritty.

I think for the most part For Your Eyes Only is dark, just with some lighter relief, whereas Die Another Day is literally two different films within one.

I have to say, I really like this Bond movie too and rank it at #12 around for me.

I feel that a lot of the complaints about it, are kind of double-standard-ish, cause we have seen these kinds of cheesy, corny over the top things in other Bond movies prior, that get a pass from fans, in comparison

So I don't see why this one is the exception to the rules, so to speak.

Forgot Madonna was even in it. Fencing coach right?

Yea Brosnan was a very good bond, Goldeneye is the best Bond film since Spy Who Loved Me I think. His other 2 were OK, but Die Another Day was an abomination. The Daniel Craig ones haven't been that great either. Skyfall and Casino were OK but Craigs other 2 were dire.
skyfall and casiono were ok??? are you serious, just ok??? lol

I think you'd have to cite some examples regarding the stuff that's equally cheesy but tolerated, but bad stuff is only as tolerable or intolerable as the rest of the movie is good enough to make up for it (which Die Another Day isn't).

Bruh you already posted the exact same thing on the last page and he already answered you. And yeah, they're both OK.

I would argue as well that theres a difference between say the cheesier bonds of the late 60's and 70's and Day Another Day in that the latter is lacking the same kind of charm, to me after the opening it just felt like the nadir of big dumb blockbuster excess.

In retrospect you could I think say that actually the previous couple of Brosnan Bonds had quite a lot of this to them but lived somewhat off of the good will of Goldeneye. That film I think exploited Brosnan potentially being a bit of a stereotypical but blander mashup of previous Bonds as it actually spends a lot of time deconstructing the character.

Well basically a lot of people say they don't like Die Another Day for the cheesy dialogue, but other Bond movies have cheesy dialogue lines too, such as:

"Darling, I give you very best duck"

"Call me Hilly" (Bond telling the girl to call him that instead of Sir Hilary)

"A genuine Felix lighter, how illuminating"

"For 20 bucks, I'll take you to a Ku Klux Klan cookout"

These are just a few lines, I could name more.. But these lines are just as cheesy as any of the dialogue out of Die Another Day, so don't know why poeple say the cheesy lines ruined the movie.

Nobody here singled out the dialogue, though. If anything, dialogue's the only thing people haven't explicitly complained about in this thread (which only adds to my point that people would tolerate it if the movie was good enough...but it's not, so they don't).

The main complaint that unifies all the others is that Die Another Day is too silly even by the already-silly standards of the Bond franchise. Each entry has to try to balance the silly and serious aspects of the character just right to work and Die Another Day might just be the most imbalanced entry of them all. The tonal mess is set by how Bond gets tortured non-stop for a year and it's shown under the credits while Madonna does a poppy number over the top (speaking of which, I'm pretty sure this is the only time in Bond history that the theme song's singer appears in the movie proper so that's definitely a point for the "too silly" argument), to say nothing of how it being the 20th film (and thus a milestone for the franchise) means that it just steals plots and concepts from the last 19 movies and makes an uninteresting mess of a movie as a result. The problems with this movie are legion and go well beyond just having silly dialogue.

Oh okay, I actually like Die Another Day, and I think it's one of the better silly campy entries. There are other camp entries as well such as The Man with the Golden Gun, Diamonds Are Forever, Moonraker and Octopussy. I don't think that DAD is too silly compared to those ones, but that is just my opinion.

I didn't really think the opening torture scene was superserious though, as Bond would look much worse if tortured for a year, in a serious entry I think. I also really like Gustav Graves as a villain and Halle Berry was not only a charming sidekick, I also thought she was sexier than the average Bond girl even.

I would rank it somewhere around #12, on my Bond movie ranking list, but that's me.

Welcome to the human race...
I think there's also the matter of context - those other films came from a time when silliness was more or less the norm for Bond whereas Die Another Day came out in the wake of the Dalton/Brosnan films trying to take the franchise more seriously so it also comes across as so much of a backwards step for the franchise that they had to do a thoroughly serious reboot with Craig. That and its relative recency mean that it sticks out more as a bad movie when, like you said, there are other films that match it for silliness. Maybe it's just that the whole franchise is silly regardless of the attempts to give it gritty reboots and stuff.

Im just baffled that people here say that skyfall and casino royale are just ok film, just lol

Movie Forums Squirrel Jumper
Casino Royale and Skyfall I both like a lot better than Die Another Day, but I still like Day Another Day as a fun silly entry. Now it is one of the first ones I saw growing up, so it's not like I could compare it to Goldeneye, or Dalton, or anything like that. I just enjoyed as a silly over the top action movie that I thought was well done. I don't think of it as a step backwards but more of a throwback to those who may have enjoyed the sillier entries before Dalton came along. But I am also seeing it as one of the first I've seen without being to judge much prior to it.

But having seen the whole series, now, I still think it's better than the first two, and last two Moore ones.

Welcome to the human race...
I'm not that baffled. Even the best Bonds aren't exactly great (and it probably helped that in both Casino Royale and Skyfall's cases they were following some of the franchise's most hated entries so they couldn't help but look amazing in comparison).

Movie Forums Squirrel Jumper
I just don't get all the hate for Die Another Day. I mean sure it's not in the top 10 or anything, but it's certainly not the worst, like a lot of have made it out to be. I think there are 9 or 10 entries I would put below it.

I mean I know the points have been made, I just feel like those same points could be applied to other entries as well, that are not thought of as bad.

Movie Forums Squirrel Jumper
Well my ranking of what movies are below Die Another Day, would go something like this.

24. Quantum of Solace
23. Thunderball
22. The Man With The Golden Gun
21. Diamonds Are Forever
20. Live and Let Die
19. You Only Live Twice
18. The Living Daylights
17. Spectre
16. A View To A Kill
15. Octopussy
14. Die Another Day

So I would put Die Another Day around #14, but I might flip it with Octopussy and it's a tough call. Sure it's an over the top campy entry, but I was entertained by it on that level, and I still think it's a better put together package than some of the other entries in comparison.
