What do you of Atomic Blonde (2017)?

I really like the action scenes, but I feel like plot wise, not a lot happens in the movie and by the end, I felt underwhelmed and thought they could have done a lot more with the story, and built towards a bigger, more compelling climax and ending.

I also felt that the lesbians sex scenes, were shot and cut in a way, as if it were there just to titillate a male audience, rather than actually presented for a more legitimate reason.

The movie is set in the 80s and has a lot of 80s songs, which I was looking forward to, but they play a lot of bad 80s songs, or ones that do not sound as good in my opinion or haven't aged well.

But the action scenes are quite good as well as the cinematography. But what do you think?

Welcome to the human race...
The more I think about it, the less I like it. Even catching the much-acclaimed stairwell scene on TV a couple of months back just made me wonder what I saw in it the first time around and I do agree that it means the film reaches its peak far too early as a result (especially when it just wraps itself up in more and more convolutions before suddenly deciding to just cut through them all and end already, thus rendering the whole film anti-climactic).

right away I knew it was too cool, slick and detached for me and I'm a bit tired of strong woman roles in general, I mean the rate they are being knocked out coinciding with feminists saying there needs to be more is frying my brain... add James Mcvoy (whatever his name is) and lesbians to the mix and I had even less inclination to see it through... I made about 20 minutes in before throwing in the towel

I tend to view this as an entertainment genre film(ala John Wick) with the odd hint at some dramatic depth rather than some serious spy thriller that gets drawn into playing to the crowd. It was decently entertaining in that sense I felt, not a classic but some memorable scenes to it and McAvoy gave a fun performance.

It does honestly feel a little strange to get offended at quite mild sex in a film were people are being brutally stabbed in the face for our enjoyment.

“Hell will hold no surprises for you.”
Pretty good movie, not great. When I heard one trailer call it the "female John Wick", I couldn't help but laugh though.

I don't need an action movie to have depth necessarily and can just be fun. I just felt that the sex scene, the way it was shot and edited, was done to titillate a certain male audience it seems, and sticks out like a sore thumb as a result. Like it was done in a fetishistic way, unlike the violence.

I was thinking c'mon Charlize, you don't have to arouse that section of the audience in that way, you're better than that... but she was good for the rest of the movie per say.

Yeah but it felt out of place with the rest of the movie cause the movie wants to be a spy thriller, and then it turns into soft-core porn done in a way male titillation sort of way.

I loved it and Lorraine and Delphine's relationship - she was the only character Lorraine really cared for. I don't however see anything 'feminist' about Atomic Blonde. Just happens to be a female spy this time around who is obviously trained well enough to fight - and very tiring fight sequences too, as in you feel your energy draining with her. Not the nice easy woman taking on a man fight sequences you usually get!

It's a very style over substance movie, but with well done action, if that's what you mean?

Style over substance action isn't really my preference, but so I'll likely pass.

But hey, if you enjoyed it, that's all that matters.

I enjoyed the action parts of it, but whenever it tried to have an actual story with actual romance, I found it quite underwhelming and by the numbers.

Yeah I wouldn't disagree with that, large parts of the film are obviously playing on titillation, its moreso that I think its a bit strange to get hung up on this when the film is also showing much more graphic violence also largely to entertain.

Well I see your point, but I guess I feel that the violence can entertain both male and female audiences, where as the sexual titillation is aimed at male, so I feel there is a gender bias there, where as the violence can entertain a general audience without having a bias more so, if that make sense?
