I just realized something -

Cesar Romero's Joker was the most insane - because only someone insane would put face paint OVER a mustache!
Plus (that's not all)... I also conclude that Romero's Joker was actually the first to break from the origin that the Joker's looks were the result of a dunking in chemicals (and we thought Ledger's was the first to do this!)

Here's why: if the chemicals caused the Joker's hair to turn green, wouldn't his mustache come in green as well? But Romero's (quite visible) mustache is NOT green, which means the man behind the grin was wearing make-up over top his mustache - his character wasn't deformed by chemicals, but was wearing make-up just like Ledger's Joker!

(Okay, I know the behind the scenes story is that Romero refused to shave his mustache so they had to put make-up over it and we - the audience - were not supposed to notice his very obvious mustache, but it's fun putting this stuff into comic book context, especially when we had a later Joker that made history as a mad man wearing make-up as opposed to having his skin & hair changed by chemicals!)

Ah, another enigmatic retro mystery from the annals of comicdom!
