What an absolute disaster of a bloke. It's a good documentary, and some of the facial expressions of his wife are proper car crash tv.

He just couldn't help himself could he?! Still in prison too. Stirchley said earlier, Huma deserves a medal for being with him.

Raiders of the Lost Ark

Flashback cinema, went to see this in the theater yesterday, incredible experience. Love the practical effects, PG horror and Karen Allen's performance

Really enjoyed this criminally unappreciated Walter Hill neo-noir. Being set in New Orleans, and being a resident of South Louisiana, the "Cajun" accents aren't as bad as The Big Easy (1986), but Elizabeth McGovern's accent probably could be labeled "Cajun Black Face." The story is simple: an over the top ugly Mickey Rourke (this movie basically predicted what he would look like in the late 90s/2000s) is betrayed during a robbery, and after being sent to prison, is given a new face and new alias - he now has to choose between living his new life and returning to his old one to seek revenge. The real star of the film is vintage 1980s New Orleans/French Quarter.

RATING:

This might just do nobody any good.

Megapiranha (2010)

Asylum nonsense with a 1980s one-hit-wonder and a non-actor stuntman in the two lead roles.

Awful CGI effects, no acting talent whatsoever, zero charisma between the cast.
Way over dubbed in the sound looping... basically whenever someone speaks, their voice sounds as if they're 3 inches away from the mic, even if they're upstage.
The crew also seem to know the movie has absolutely no peril, so they've taken to having the camera constantly swaying from side to side to add some sort of tension to the scenes.
What makes it more disorientating is that the cast are doing the same thing, swaying side to side to try and add some sort of urgency to the scenes.
There's also constant music in the background, and none of it fits the scene in which it's placed.

"No matter what it takes, get those scientists here... they're the only ones who know how to kill fish"

Even for The Asylum, this is rock bottom. Avoid.

Excellent review, Rodent! However, you left out two important things: It co-stars faded teen "singer" Tiffany, and the great scene with the "hero" lying on his back, kicking piranha after piranha back into the water as they leap at him.

If the poster is anything to go by this sounds stupendous. Probably better than Sharknado 1!

Theyre quite a pretty fish about the size of a small hand. Mr D caught a few. I liked the buggers but we threw them back in.

Women will be your undoing, Pépé

Hostiles
+ A nicely fleshed out story of a dedicated Union Captain, unwillingly escorting a Native American Chief from 7 years of custody to his old home. Both men are past enemies, both with violent, unforgivable pasts.
We see beyond the usual tropes and more into the individuals and their journey through equally unforgivable situations.
A beautiful and moving film.

Suburbicon
+++ Did not see ANY of that coming AT ALL. Though I should have known, after seeing in the end credits that the Coen Brothers helped in the screenplay, just how quirky and off the rails this would be.
Curious to see how a rewatch would play out.

Freak Show
+++ While the premise is one that has been played out to near death, it was and is, an old tune played very beautifully in a loving rendition.
A teenage transvestite is forced to live with his conservative dad and go to a stuck up, conservative school. Costume changes ensue.
So does a heartwarming story ensue that was a utter f@ckin delight to watch.

Tom Cruise is a movie-star. No doubt about it. He's had a variety of films, dived into different genres and in one or two instance, maybe, just maybe disappeared behind the character. What comes with being a movie-star though, is for the most part people just see you and NOT the character. Tom Cruise, unfortunately, mostly falls into this category. People only see Tom Cruise being Tom Cruise. A charming, good-looking guy who does wild things. So when Cruise gets to play a charming guy who does wild things, the question I ask is...does he disappear into this role?

No. As good as he is, he's still Tom Cruise. I love Tom Cruise though, he is legitimately the one actor that comes to mind when I think of someone who always gives 110% to their films. If you were to ask me someone who is on the opposite side of that spectrum, I'd have to pick Bruce Willis. So if you're a Tom Cruise hater, at least admit to the fact that the guy loves to commit to the roles.

Barry Seal is a TWA pilot who is contacted by the CIA to do some covert missions while flying a plane. He agrees. Then he's asked to do more things...he agrees. Then he's asked by the drug cartel to do some things...he agrees. Then he's asked to do even more things from the CIA....he agrees. Do you see a pattern here? Seal apparently is so good at his job that even the White House asked him to do some things....he agreed. American Made is a film that falls into the category of it being too wild to be true, but it is true.

Cruise, as mentioned earlier, is charming here as Seal. He's not given many emotional scenes to stretch the character, but he's got enough entertaining sequences to give the audience a good time. Domhnall Gleeson is the CIA agent who recruits him and Sarah Wright plays the typical house wife with nothing to do but look pretty and be the main characters moral compass. Wright has the beautifully blonde generic face that I thought he was several different actresses before realizing that I hadn't really seen her in anything else before. Heck, she is credited as "Sexy Blonde" in the terrible rom-com Made of Honor. Yet she does a decent job with what little she is given.

Seal makes so much money that he has to dig holes in his backyard to bury bags of cash. Trouble is, when he starts digging, he accidentally digs up his previously buried bags of cash. To have so much money that you don't know what to do with it is something I and everyone else most likely dream of. Seal lived this life. Having that much cash does not go unnoticed though, which sets in motion more problems for the guy. Especially when his loser brother-in-law shows up and starts stealing some of the cash.

Cruise teams up once again with Liman, the two previously worked on the surprisingly awesome Edge of Tomorrow (or whatever it is they're calling it these days) and they successfully create another entertaining film here. Maybe too much fun? I feel like the stakes are never fully embraced here and the fun factor takes over. It's not until the last portion of the film do we feel any real sense of danger and it has nothing to do with flying the planes.

The film won't blow anyone away, nor will it leave you hating it. It's one of those "just-good" movies. You can either take that as a positive or a negative....or in line with the film and be just neutral.

I think that is one of the best summaries of an actor and movie I have seen. Thanks for posting that Suspect. I heartily agree.

Ant-Man (2015)

Hellloooo Cindy - Scary Movie (2000)
The exorcist

Felt the need for a rewatch. It’s just unbelievably scary and creepy. Watch this in an old, cold house at night with the sound up like I did and feel your balls shrivell up. I’m scared right now!

There’s nothing to fault - great performances etc the list goes on. It’s a masterpiece not just a horror masterpiece.

5 out of 5

One thing I did notice this viewing. Very subtle stuff mind you. And I could be overthinking the character. Is there the hint of a more than friendship level relationship between the main father and the other middle aged priest? Any vibes there? Not that there’s anything wrong with that but of course that would be deemed wrong in the church and may cause the certain father a great amount of angst and guilt.

Finally was able to squeeze a movie in during the world cup.

A typical movie of the time. Decent. Nothing special. 5.5/10.
