Zorba The Greek - 7/10

Great beginning, some fine writing, but there's a lot of scenes that seemed incomplete or meaningless.. I would have used more Anthony Quinn, and would have anyone replace Alan Bates.
You might have something there. I enjoyed the film very much when it came out in '64. But I'd been waiting for it since reading the book by Nikos Kazantzakis. The book was actually much better.

Still, there were astounding performances by Lila Kedrova as Madam Hortense, and of course Quinn's wonderful portrayal of Zorba. I too was not fond of Bates, but on the other hand he was supposed to be a weak introverted type. His character pretty much followed the one outlined in the novel.

Gotham by Gaslight (2018)

Batman with an Oliver Twist.

This might just do nobody any good.
I’ve been rooting for a live-action adaptation of that. Batman’s established enough to experiment with.

Or, y’know, Batman Beyond.

Sorry if I'm rude but I'm right
Seems you made a typo. Corrected it for ya.

I really enjoyed it for that reason. Not so much when using the standard grading curve.

They had a short for the upcoming Suicide Squad animated, so I guess they are gonna be pushing this R-rated thing.

Hellloooo Cindy - Scary Movie (2000)
Certainly. The first one was fairly down-to-earth and realistic. The rest of them were complete cheese imo.
💯 I don’t really like them, especially the third. Havnt seen the latest one with old Stallone. Yes first is great. At the time I watched it I thought it was special. Will have to revisit it, been a few years. I remember it being so more than just an action film. Action/drama maybe cat mouse chase with intelligence. Maybe a overlooked gem could I say? Hardly hear it mentioned.

Gifted

A real surprise here, Gifted offers an engaging look at the lengths one will go for love. Despite a fairly predictable plot, the cast is charming enough to deliver an plesant drama that will have you cheering or grabbing tissues. Maybe both.

Frank is a single man raising his niece, child prodigy Mary. Frank knows her brilliance but wants to shield her from the way society treats prodigies, hopefully he can give her a normal life for a 7 year old girl. Things get complicated when a teacher notices Mary's brilliance and word spreads. Soon Frank's mother comes into the picture and demands that Mary is given the tools needed to explore her brilliance. A nasty custody battle ensues which reveals dark secrets from the family's past that no one really wants to talk about.

Much of the film's success lies with the chemistry that Chris Evans has with his on screen niece, Mckenna Grace. Mary is intelligent, but lacks the social norms a child of her age should have. Her only interactions are with her uncle, their neighbour (Octavia Spencer) and a one eyed cat. Grace manages to portray Mary as completely innocent, fun and wise beyond her years, all rolled into one cute little package. She is a strong anchor for the film and people instantly gravitate towards her. She has a likable spunk to her that sets her apart from other kids.

Chris Evans is mostly known for wearing a shield, but look at his other work and you'll find some earnest performances that may surprise you. He has the charm, the witty humour and looks, but there is so much more to him than that. Here he's a man who is out of his element, yet does what he thinks is the best thing for Mary. Is it the best thing though? Who knows, he has his reasons and uses them as firepower against his mother Lindsay Duncan, who comes in gun blazing for her own agenda. They both want what's best for Mary, they just have completely different views on that. Although, one can argue that the mother has a bit more of selfish reason for her goals, which explode in a sad scene towards the end.

Despite being predictable, Gifted is a heartwarming film that has flown under the radar and I encourage people to give it a chance.
I took your advice, and sat down with Gifted last night. Despite my misgivings that the description seemingly had "Trite! PC!" overlaid in blinking neon, we decided to give it 15 minutes. But the narrative and especially the acting drew me right in.

McKenna Grace as the child with genius mathematical gifts was not only darling, but convincing. She's a very natural child actress, and was able to portray a wide range. They almost took her over the top into precociousness, but they pulled up short, avoiding annoyance.

Chris Evans, as her uncle, turned in a surprisingly subtle performance. His character's writing pretty much avoided cliche, and spared us the goo-goo molasses that generally comes with these types of roles.

Lindsay Duncan as the strict grandmother was slightly over-played. But Duncan is a specialist at playing bee-itches, and was able to give the role some depth.

Evidently S.A.G. has made a regulation that Octavia Spencer must be in every Hollywood feature. She does nice work, but her parts are starting to all feel the same.

One drawback was that it's impossible that a 7-year-old, even a genius, could possibly understand and work with the highest level physics of the world's finest physicists. It would have been more believable had they put her into normal university mathematics classes.

That aside, Tom Flynn's original screen play was well put together, mostly avoiding triteness. It's always a pleasure to see a well done film come out with a PG-13 rating.

I’m always nervous when someone decides to watch a movie based on my review/recommendation.

Glad you enjoyed it.

McFarland USA
7/10
I usually don't go for sports movies, but I enjoyed this one.

I'm glad to see that you liked McFarland, USA. I hadn't heard of it until recently, but I added it to my watchlist for the Directed By Women countdown, and I'm looking forward to watching it.

Elvis & Nixon (2016)

This is another movie that I watched for the upcoming Directed By Women countdown. It was very strange, but also very entertaining.

I know that this movie is based on the real meeting between Elvis Presley and then President Richard Nixon, but I had no idea that Elvis was such a nut. After watching the movie, I had to look up information about the real meeting because I couldn't believe that some of that stuff really happened, but apparently Elvis really was that crazy. Maybe it was the drugs?

Both Kevin Spacey and Michael Shannon are great in this, but I felt that Michael Shannon was miscast as Elvis Presley because Elvis is too well known, and Shannon doesn't look enough like him, but that's not a complaint about his acting, just his look.
