Explanation: While perhaps more subtle than some other characters, this man is cruel and a jerk because he flat-out lies to his wife's face for a long time while hiding his selfish behavior, then finally tells her about what he did, while trying to guilt trip her at the same time... when SHE did nothing wrong. Later she has to deal with the consequences of his actions.
He is also unkind to his son. It's men like this who get away with being abusive at home, but seem like a "decent guy" in public.
