War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) -

The title of this film (and the related trailers) are somewhat misleading. Instead of being about the tension between man and ape exploding into an epic battle for the planet, this film is more of an emotional story for Caesar as he tries to come to terms with the events of Dawn, and the consequences his ongoing decisions have on the entire ape community.

Despite expecting an action-packed film, I was fine with the change of pace. However there was nothing really spectacular about it, and it often felt like the writers were trying too hard to reach a situation similar to the world of the first Planet of the Apes, while allowing the apes to keep the moral high ground. While I didn't like it as much as Rise or Dawn, it was still a solid and perfectly enjoyable film.

Scream 3. When people connected to the production of Stab 3, the Hollywood movie series based on the real-life killing sprees in the first two films, start getting murdered, series survivors Sidney (Neve Campbell), Gale (Courtney Cox) and Dewey (David Arquette) fear the nightmare is starting all over again. Why is the new killer so obsessed with finding Sidney? And why do they keep leaving photos of Sid's mom as a young girl at the scene of every murder? The third film in the great horror series often comes in for stick, but to be honest I've always liked it and still do, and indeed actually somewhat prefer it to the 2nd one (the climax is certainly stronger IMO). Still a lot of fun.

Force of Evil (1948)

This is the follow up to Body and Soul for actor John Garfield (who died young) and director Abraham Polonsky (who got blackballed by Hollywood), and I've loved both movies. In this movie from the noirs list, Garfield plays a mob lawyer whose team is looking to take over the numbers racket in New York City. To do this, they are going to fix it so 776 comes up on the 4th of July. Many people play that number on that date, so many of their competitors will go out of business. The problem is that Garfield's brother is one of the competitors. I thought that this was great as a cautionary tale, and it was tight, tense, and entertaining.

The Last Chance (1945)

This is a Cannes' winner that I believe is probably much better than I'm rating it. I don't think it's widely available, and the print I watched on YouTube is of shabby quality. An American and an English prisoner escape together from a train during World War 2. They try to bop their way to Switzerland while meeting and avoiding different characters. There is great authenticity in the look of the movie and it is in many languages. I almost wish I didn't watch it because I cannot judge it fairly.

The Bank Dick (1940) - Edward F. Cline

Meshes Of The Afternoon (1943) - Maya Deren and Alexander Hammid

Gran Casino (1947) - Luis Bunuel

The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943)

I didn't know anything about this going in except that it was highly acclaimed. For some reason I had the idea that it might be animated or foreign language, but of course neither is the case. It is a 2 hour and 45 minute British film, and for like an hour I was waiting for the character of Colonel Blimp to appear. There is no damn Colonel Blimp! Anyway, we meet an older general in the beginning of the movie, and we proceed to get a look at the previous 40 years of his life. It is a spectacular story with 3 amazing performances by Roger Livesey, Anton Walbrook, and a young Deborah Kerr who plays 3 roles-wow! In the latter stages of the movie, it's emotional impact started to hit me as I figured out what it was all about. The thing is though, that depending on the viewer, it could be about many different things. This is a very well rounded movie that would take me multiple viewings to fully appreciate. It is a great movie-very much!

The Friends of Eddie Coyle - 7.5/10

Surprised I never heard of this movie until someone in a chat room told me about it.. And I'm a fan of Mitchum - one of his best roles, and I think part of the reason is because he's middle-aged, and the movie is gritty and that street realism of the 70s, and he delivers.

You mean me? Kei's cousin?

Dressed To Kill (1941)
A very fun lil whodunit detective flick, that sadly I won't have room on my 40's List but was definitely worth a watch.
