Which in my opinion would make it more jarring.

It doesn't make sense for Ash to be played with any hint of emotion in that scene. Part of the reveal is his sudden lack of humanity. Freeman playing up any kind of malice betrays that.

You know who would make a good Ash? Bruce Campbell.

Isn't that what playing against type is all about?

Personally I would have gone with Kevin Costner. He's got that quiet but dangerous coolness that suits Bud's demeanor. On a sidenote, I really hope Kevin ends up in a Tarantino film for real. That collaboration is long overdue.

He was supposed to have a minor role in Django Unchained, that of a slave fighting trainer named Ace Woody, but after he bowed out due to scheduling conflicts, the part was scrapped completely.

Well, depends on how you want to play this. You could fantasy cast an actor who requires some generousity to in a role or another for whom the role comes more naturally to.

That and Freeman is sort of boring pick for Ash. I mean, I said it was cute because, ha ha, Bilbo replaces Bilbo in something else.
