Critically acclaimed movies that you feel are overrated

Tools

Admit it. There are some acclaimed films which you feel shouldn't be so well received. For me, it has to be:

1. Shutter Island (the ending made it too pretentious).
2. Magnolia (I love PT Anderson but I feel that the movie sort of lost its way around the half way point).
3. Bridesmaids (What was so special about this movie?? It was so mediocre. Tried too hard for laughs).

Welcome to the human race...
We have literally dozens of threads dedicated to discussing movies that we feel are overrated, whether critically or otherwise. Using the search function (as indicated by the magnifying glass near the top of the page) and typing in "overrated" will show you where to find them.

Shutter Island (the ending made it too pretentious)
As I re-watched "Shutter Island", it was not as good as I remembered it. Still a decent movie. The biggest problem with the movie was that it had too many familiar movie tropes jammed in without enough time to flesh any of them out. 5/10
Bridesmaids (What was so special about this movie?? It was so mediocre. Tried too hard for laughs)
It appeals to female audience. I did not find it funny as a whole. 5/10

Guardians of the Galaxy
The Jungle Book (2016)
Captain America Civil War
The Empire Strikes Back (possibly)
Return of the King (possibly)
Goodfellas
Batman Returns
Argo (possibly)
Scarface
Toy Story 3
Virtually any praised 007 film (absolute exceptions being Spectre, GoldenEye and Casino Royale)
Spider-Man 2

It is overrated because it is so widely considered thee best, not because it is a bad movie. 7/10
Good for it's time, but not timeless. 6/10
One of the best superhero movies. 7/10

This might just do nobody any good.
Goodfellas suffers from a similar problem to Pulp Fiction in that it's been parodied and reference so often that it's easy to forget the real substance of the whole thing.

People focus more on the superficial stuff (bad Pesci impersonation, "get your f***ing shinebox) and they forget the great movie underneath.

One I hate (HATE) is American Beauty. The films sentiment is so basic and forced. It deminishes on more than one viewing.

I'm also probably the only one who thinks The Avengers is overrated.

Big second to Bridesmaids...never stood all the fuss about that movie and Melissa McCarthy actually getting an Oscar nomination? Seriously?

The Silence of the Lambs
The Martian
Rain Man
Thelma & Louise

Magnolia I can agree, Goodfellas is a masterpiece (in my opinion)

Guardians of the Galaxy

Captain America Civil War

Batman Returns

Godfathers?

HEAT???

Scarface is good, maybe even underrated, but at some point I think it become overrated. To me that's like saying that Analyze This is De Niro's best.

I think Godfather is better, and Carlito's Way.

“I was cured, all right!”
The Silence of the Lambs
Civil War
Guardians of the Galaxy and all others Marvel movies.
Damn, the last marvel movie that I liked was Spider Man 2 in 2004...

As the thread title suggests, it's a movie that mariel feels is overrated. I like it myself but I can definitely see its flaws (enough so that I wouldn't call it Pacino's best either) and why people may think it's overrated or even flat-out hate it.

I'm more curious as to why they consider Spectre an exception when it comes to considered Bond movies overrated.

Putting Silence Of The Lambs in with 2 superhero movies counts as a felony in some states.

Bound to get shot for this but ....

Metropolis

... I just didn't feel the song and dance numbers were appropriate
