Welcome to the human race...
Well, that's surprising.
A little, yeah. It's still got its issues that hold it back but I didn't hate it.

Fright Night (2011) -

Almost on par with the original.

Some recent movies

1) Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events
Great emotion - fundamental point is the problem of self-awareness and perfection. The Baudelaire children are value, but to know of them means to have to know of collision..
I think the primary idea of the 2004 adaptation is to reflect the problem of life's source - knowledge juxtaposed against state.

2) The Force Awakens
Much better, and much more relevant than all the other SW movies.

3) Don't Blink
Like TC2, a compelling allegory about society. TC2 is better of course, but Don't Blink is nevertheless strong.

4) Ouija Origin of Evil
Didn't see the original, but am in no doubt that this prequel is a far superior film - brilliantly shot and eerie.

5) The Jungle Book (2016)
Disappointed. Hasn't the sense of intelligence that I hoped for; Bill Murray doesn't help the movie, though overall I think the film is acceptable - no masterpiece, but reasonable.

Madness is the emergency exit…
Under the Shadow (2016)

After her husband gets transferred to another heavy war-torn area, a woman & her daughter struggles to cope with the terrors of 1980s post-revolution, war torn Tehran but things get even worse when a mysterious supernatural entity begins to haunt in their apartment.

Definitely worth a watch for the fans of other recent horror flicks that's dealt with single parenting issues with twisted & intriguing stories i.e. The Babadook and Goodnight Mommy. UTS starts mostly like a contemporary middle-eastern/Iranian drama flick focusing a family in distress or social issues, takes its time to set the premise for the characters and then slowly descents into the horror parts with a few but decently done jump scares & eerie set pieces. Loved it for its skillful direction & great all around performance from the central cast. Yeah...it still could have been a lot more creepier but my only disappointment was actually the ending that felt kinda forced or to some extent "uneventful"; at least horror fans may going to miss a little punch at the end. Other than that, I'll definitely add this to my list of "BEST HORROR FILMS OF 2016".

Pretty good for a TV movie.

Eaten Alive (1976)

Not to be confused with the 1980 Italian cannibal flick with the same title, oddly enough though they both feature classic film star Mel Ferrer. This movie was Tobe Hooper's follow up to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and I was somewhat surprised how poor it was. It doesn't take much for me to enjoy a horror movie, but there's not much here besides some decent kills. You've got a murderous redneck hotel owner with a pet crocodile in his swamp, and that's all you really need to know. A better villain would have helped. It started off promisingly enough with some guy saying to a hooker: Name's Buck, and I'm rarin' to f**k. When it shows the guys face, it turns out to be the great Robert Englund. Unfortunately, it was all downhill from there.

Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation (2015)

Finished here. It's been fun.
Freedom

Bartas' ability to photograph landscapes is second to none. He, a filmmaker of sights and sounds, places his characters in landscapes that are harsh and unforgiving. I didn't love the film, but it does leave a lingering effect on the viewer.

Pickup on South Street

Does to film-noir what Johnny Guitar did for westerns. The characters that are typically villains turn out to be the heroes. The "protagonists", if one can even call them that, are a thief and a prostitute.

Finished here. It's been fun.
Death in Venice [re-rating]

The Gustav Mahler music. Visconti's immaculate compositions. These two elements coalesce to create a film I would deem "perfect".. Roger Ebert thought the relationship depicted in the film is homosexual - it isn't. One can view the film that way, but the relationship between Tadzio and Aschenbach is more than that. The film presents a man drawn to youth, beauty and innocence. Death in Venice is a film of extraordinary beauty. It is, without a doubt in my mind, one of the greatest films ever made.

The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976)

"I guess we all died a little in that damn war..."

One of the greats! A wonderful ride with a very resonating ending.

Cobpyth's Movie Log ~ 2019

10 (1979)

This is the first time I've seen this movie all the way through in one shot and uncut. I enjoyed it quite a bit, although I still think Dudley Moore's best performance is as Arthur. This is the famous flick that has him as a famed composer dating Julie Andrews for years but getting the middle-age crazies and pursuing Bo Derek's character after seeing her at a traffic stop on the way to her wedding. This being a Blake Edwards movie, there are plenty of sight-gags and pratfalls, mostly with Dudley taking the pain, but it's also a bit dramatic and sad in some parts. This features the famous fantasy scene of Bo Derek in a one-piece swimsuit, with cornrowed hair, running down the beach towards Dudley. Yet, with Bo and Julie in this, the most attractive woman for me is Dee Wallace (a year before becoming Dee Wallace-Stone after her marriage). Dee plays a single woman Dudley meets in Mexico (where he's chasing after Derek) and they have an unsuccessful fling, which Dee blames on herself. As Dudley plays piano at the bar, she has tears in her eyes while he plays a sad song. She gets advice from bartender Brian Dennehy, who has a nice but small role here. Edwards regular Robert Webber co-stars as Moore's songwriting partner and there are many familiar faces in small roles scattered throughout. The first half is mostly comedy and the last half is mostly romance tinged with bittersweetness. Still worth seeing if you like any of the people involved. Had to put forth Dee in the pic below.

Earth vs. the Flying Saucers (1956)

Super-fun science fiction movie of the 50's with a very simple tale of flying saucers invading Earth and blowing up crap left and right. Scientist Hugh Marlowe comes up with a way to defeat them, causing them to crash into lots of famous Washington D.C. structures. The great special effects are done by the king of stop-motion animation, Ray Harryhausen. There are no monsters to speak of like the in latter-day Harryhausen films, but there are robot-suited aliens that can obliterate anything with their built-in arm lasers. The saucers are very cool if not overtly adorned. But who cares? They do what flying saucers do...they fly but they also have blasters that blow stuff up real good! And they crash real good. It's all great fun, part of the 50's Cold War scare glut of Sci-Fi movies. A winner all the way and a must for any true Harryhausen fan.

P.S. Yes, Tim Burton gave homage to this film with a lot of his movie Mars Attacks!, like "borrowing" from the scene above.
