Italian(?) movie about the life of a saintly hermit

Pretty sure this film is Italian. It's a religious theme. In colour. Movie tells the central character's story beginning as a child or young man in rural Italy. In a key scene he is living as a hermit when an flirtatious young woman deliberately tries to tempt him. He reacts by chopping off his own finger as a penance. She is shocked and changes her ways, becomes a religious devotee.

There's a motif that occurs more than once in the film: he holds out his hand and a leaf miraculously falls into his palm.
