The Central Park Five (2012)

Documentary about a criminal case that I had heard about, but one that I had very limited knowledge of. It is very well made and informative, and has plenty of interviews with available, pertinent players. The miscarriage of justice in this story is outrageous.

Wanna Date? Got Any Money?

Hugh Grant's best movie. This movie is awesome if you're down for a late 80's slightly psychedelic horror experience. I remember seeing this for the first time on Bravo(Canada) probably a good ten years or more ago and wondering what the hell I had just stumbled onto. Basically it's an adaptation of a Bram Stoker novel by the same name, and takes place in the English countryside with root in English Folklore. Definitely more awe inspiring ten years ago, but still an entertaining hour and a half.

3/5

Welcome to the human race...
Maybe not the worst film, but the worse diction by any actor. That's why I call Russell Crowe, Mr Mubbles. I agree with the 2 rating.
He's not good, but he's hardly the worst. I mean, have you ever heard this guy talk?

Finished here. It's been fun.

Mann is king.

Seriously, what a poet this man is. One of the best of all-time, in my humble opinion. I don't think this reaches the heights of Heat or Miami Vice, but this is right up there. What I love about Mann is that I never get the vibe he's trying to be cool; he is cool. Modern day Melville....but even better.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)

Well worth the hype. We have old friends returning, plus a new trio of good guys, a couple of new bad guys, plus cameos by certain characters from Return of the Jedi. The acting goes from outstanding to kind-of-okay (Carrie Fisher, I'm looking at you). The outstanding one all the way through for me was Daisy Ridley. She is terrific in this as Rey. I feel we have a new superstar in the works here. John Boyega as Finn is pretty awesome also. I remember him from the film Attack the Block, in which he gave a fine performance being several years younger. So, it's very encouraging to see him growing leaps-and-bounds as an actor. There are several humorous scenes between Boyega and Harrison Ford, which is where most of the humor in the movie comes from. Plus, you have a new robotic character named BB-8. His "part" was fun and made for the cute requisite in the movie. Some critics have said that there is too much humor in the movie. I didn't find that to be true at all. The mood was mostly adventurous all the way.

It does feel like a great companion piece to the original trilogy, with the same mood for most of the film. Yes, as some have pointed out, the plot is similar to A New Hope but not a carbon copy. Things go in some different directions than the trailers would have you believe. The same theme music from John Williams is back and gets your heart pumping just as much as ever. The special effects are great, and as far as I can tell, only a few characters are CGI. Oh yeah, the action. It's pretty terrific. And as this is a J.J. Abrams movie, some of his regular actors, especially from TV, make cameo appearances.

If you're a Star Wars fan, I feel that you'll really enjoy this one and look very much forward to the next chapter. Although, you won't have long to wait for another Star Wars fix with next year's Star Wars: Rogue One.

Yeah, The Insider is cool as hell. Fantastic visual storytelling.

Peanuts Movie: 5/10
I don't get it. There's a difference between staying true to the original shorts and directly lifting 90% of the lines from them. If you want to see Peanuts characters do what they did in the Christmas special and the Thanksgiving special then you'll enjoy it fine, but if you want to see a story or a new joke you won't find it in this. There's nothing really bad in it, but there's no ambition.

It's not a favorite by a longshot, but the best movie I ever saw in the theater was "The Insider" -- I would go to the theater to see "Trainspotting 2 though, hoping it will be good.

Searching for Sugar Man (2012)

This documentary is about the search for Sixto Rodriguez, a musical artist who became a mythical type figure after seemingly vanishing without a trace. Well made with a nice story, and full of excellent music.

Phoenix (2014)

Having already watched Hiroshi Teshigahara's The Face of Another (1966), Christian Petzold's Phoenix (2014) is the second best post-war-identity-crisis-facial-reconstruction-love-story that I've watched this year. While a bad ending can sour a great film, I'm less inclined to believe that a great ending can save a messy, conflicted one. Opinion on this picture is likely dependent on the viewer's ability to accept an absurd premise being played straight.

Women will be your undoing, Pépé
I will be sad when Daniel Craig is no longer Bond.... he was the first Bond I ever watched...

Quantum Solace is good... Casino Royale... Mads Mikkelsen..
I know what you mean. I grew up with all of them and Craig brings back the rougher Bond.
I've been going through re-watches of Craig's Bonds' and will be watching Skyfall in the next few weeks. Hard to put them in any favorite order though

Predestination
Even though I saw the twists coming I was still blown away by this movie inspired by a Robert Heinlein short story "All You Zombies"

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)

I feel like I need to watch it again to give it a proper rating. Sometimes I was just soaking it all in so much that I wasn't paying too much attention to the dialogue and whatnot. Anyways, it was good, though I do think the gargantuan hype train makes it seem a lot better than it actually was. My biggest problem is that I couldn't really get into any of the new characters that much. The two main ones, Finn and Rey, were okay but I felt like they were lacking something that made them special. It was the same with Kylo Ren, he looked cool, but I also thought he lacked that certain something that made Vader such a legendary villain. Hopefully these main characters are expanded on more in later movies so I can get more invested in them. It was cool to see a lot of the old ones back, and how Han and Chewy actually played a big part in it instead of being in the background trying to get nostalgia points.

Everything else was solid sci-fi fare, big space battles, aliens, blasters etc. I did like how they actually tried to do practical effects on some parts and not just CGI-it-up on everything. The droid, BB-8, was a nice addition to the Star Wars legendary robot cast along with C3PO and R2D2.

Like I said, I'd need to see it again to give it a proper rating. For now though I'll just play it safe:
