Welcome to the human race...

Good but I was bored because I have no interest in pop art. In fact, I find it rather silly and idolization of pop icons that it represents is rather unappealing to me.
Given how the film ends up being dedicated to pointing out how Thierry Guetta's attempts to make his own art are either incomprehensible (e.g. his film) or simply mimicking his artist friends are fundamentally flawed exercises that he still manages to turn into a profitable art show, I'd argue that the silliness is kind of the point. It's debatable as to how much of the film is real, anyway.

Last movie I watched...

The Tracker -

A very solid Australian western with some surprisingly strong moments of tension and interesting artistic decisions.

Sanjuro

An entertaining film, although not quite great. Mifune is incredible as always. I might be in the minority - but I prefer Kurosawa's non-samurai movies such as Ikiru and High and Low.

The Day The Earth Stood Still

Entertaining and there's a beautiful message at the heart of the film. Definitely deserves its status as a classic, although I still wanted a bit more considering the film's reputation as a colossal classic in the genre of sci-fi.

In spite of the film's technical mastery and phenomenal acting, I was left a bit cold. This is not in the same league as Yearning, which is easily a masterpiece. Still a quality film - but not the masterwork I was expecting.

Hold That Ghost (1941)

Fun Abbott and Costello flick that was one of their early big hits. They were already well-honed by this time and click very well in this film. The story is about the boys accidentally being present when a gangster gets killed by cops, with the gangster slipping them his last will and testament (which he just happened to be carrying around with him...I know, there are reasons for it, but it just made me laugh at the movie in that scene). Anyway, Abbott and Costello inherit the gangster's old inn, which we find out quickly was a gambling joint during Prohibition. There is a question of where the gangster's hidden stash of money may be. Joining A&B are Richard Carlson, Evelyn Ankers, Mischa Auer, the Andrew Sisters, and almost stealing the movie from the star team, Joan Davis. Davis is hilarious as a radio voice actress who gets "stranded" with the rest of the crew at the inn, and has an awesome "scared face" and an even greater scream. All-told, this is a fun rolic with Abbott and Costello and well worth watching.

The Conqueror (1956)

The infamous, derided "epic" starring John Wayne as Temujin, who would later become Genghis Khan. Also starring Susan Hayward, Pedro Armendáriz, Agnes Moorehead, John Hoyt, and William Conrad. The movie has been slammed almost since its release as being horrible, with John Wayne's bad performance as Temujin being one of the main targets. I don't know...I like Wayne in most of his movies, but the writing calls for him to read lines almost as if he's reading from a cue card---he comes off as fairly stiff. When there is action, it's an okay flick, but unfortunately there is too little action. Wayne and his "blood brother," Pedro Armendáriz, get captured, get away, get captured again, sometimes together, sometimes alone. Wayne trusts his blood brother, then he doesn't, then he does. Wayne doesn't really get to show what a bad ass he is till the end during what I hoped would be an epic battle, but it's over far too quickly.

Like I said before, Wayne was miscast, the writing is stilted, but the real crime the movie commits is that it's dull. I can take a lot, but boring me is the worst. Despite all that, I won't totally trash this movie. It seems like Wayne wanted to play something other than a cowboy, but it doesn't work---still, I give him props for wanting to give it a go.

Sudden Death (1995)

This could also be called "Die Hard on Ice" but I guess that would unfair, because it's a bit more than that. Jean Claude Van Damme does get a chance to get on the ice during the hockey game but it's part of the action and pretty funny. Van Damme is a former firefighter who failed to save a little girl in the past, but I don't recall if he was fired or quit---I don't believe it's ever said. Still, he retains a connection to the fire department---he becomes a safety inspector, which to his young son is a major downer. So, with that in mind, when a crew of bad guys take over the skybox where the Vice-President is attending, Van Damme is forced into action. There is a lot of action and Van Damme having to kill baddies sometimes without a gun or knife---one great scene has him fighting a man in the stadium kitchen, snatching a bone from a food tray, breaking it in half and stabbing the guy in the neck with it. Creativity-in-action.

The chief bad guy is played by the great Powers Boothe, who oozes evil and shoots men or women without regard and threatens little kids. A movie like this needs a super bad guy and Boothe fills the role very nicely.

There are moments in the action that might make a viewer go, "Oh, come on!," chiefly during some acrobatic tricks on the roof of the stadium. But if you're still with the movie by this time, it probably won't phase you. I really enjoyed this mindless, entertaining action film. If you like Van Damme, you'll most likely really love this one.

I posted the above pic just for laughs. It is in the movie but I couldn't pass it up.

As floored as it is disturbing. Many times during the film the deranged girl states that "3 out of 4 doctors say she's insane". Then surely she would have been institutionalized before she went on her rampage...The film has shock factor, but not much else.

Considering all the hype in the horror community, I expected a lot more from this. It's basically a b-movie comedy horror, like the other ten thousand that have been released over the last 5 years.

A guilty pleasure and childhood favourite. This must be my 500th viewing.

Chelovek s kinoapparatom a.k.a.The Man with the Movie Camera (Dziga Vertov, 1929)

I feel I just attended to an intensive photography class! This is a masterpiece, a fascinating work of art, considering OR NOT it was made in 1929. Vertov managed to reproduce life without any words or logic order between the images! Memory doesn't work chronologically, why should film do? The result is one of those movies where you just sit back and witness genius!
I watched the version with Nyman's soundtrack and it is amazing!!! Almost hypnotic!
Please MoFos, let this be high on the Docs Countdown!

By the way, does anyone recommend another version with a different soundtrack?

Sorry Harmonica.......I got to stay here.

Just wow. I give 9 out of 10, and only subtract 1 because Bronson was not cast .
Pure balls, this movie is. There are too many wonderful things to list.

The way Leone stretches out the final 3-way gunfight is so bold, so deliciously over the top, that this alone puts it into epic status.

SPOILER BELOW!!!

Scream 4 (2011)

"Don't **** With the Originals"

Personally my second favorite in the series, I actually really didn't see the twist at the end coming when I first watched it. I probably should of.....Wes Craven still had it when he made this one imo.

Cooties, Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion
Meh. Starts off great, with a slightly disturbing chicken slaughter scene and with these super rude kids who soon turn into blood thirsty zombies. The dialogues are fast and funny for the most part, and there is a fun reference to the Lord of the Rings.
Unfortunately, it doesn't take long for the movie to start slowing down and the directors kinda run out of ideas. It never becomes boring, luckily, but some scenes felt like a long setup for something that never happens.
There is, though, a pretty cool scene involving a girl on a bike and air conducts. But there also way too many scenes in which the actors thought it would be a good idea to point their ******* flashlights stright at the camera. Obnoxious as a zombie kid trying to eat your head off.
5.5\10

Fargo, Joel and Ethan Cohen.
I will never be super fan of this movie as a lot of people out there, but it's definitely a good one. If there is something the Cohens are good at (ok, there's many, but this is my favorite), is telling stories that, deep inside, do not make sense. The stupidty of human nature, constantly plotting stuff that spirals out of control in the blink of an eye, a dream like atmosphere covered in endless snow, characters who talk too much and others who do not talk at all. A lot of pointless violence.
Actually, the more I think about it, the more I like it. Except for the lunch scene, with the asian guy. I read about its meaning and how important and blah blah but I just don't like it.

San Andreas (2015)

I expected worse, but still this isn't a great film in any way, not even in its subgenre of dubious disaster effects and apocalyptic porn. It's hardly even dumb fun, since the movie doesn't try to be very amusing, but overly serious and any drama there is gets lost in the effects overload. Except for the kid, he was the best actor here, though I expected to hate him at his introduction. But though his character may be bad, he is a solid actor. Some would say he overacts, but that's only because he's next to people who underacts. He is the only real actor here... Oh yeah, and The Rock gave us a little something in the end, but it was a blink and you'll miss it moment and I wish he would have done more like that. But you just don't care for these actors at all, not just because their characters are poorly written, but because we just couldn't care less for people running next to a green screen, which has been given an earthquake make-over...

That said, the movie had a few decent moments, like the surprising one-take. Well, it's not as impressive when the set isn't 100% real, but you still need to control your actors and all, so I would say it is impressive to see such a technical pull-off in a dumb movie like this. It also had a few okay exciting moments, but it was mostly drowned in the CGI - which by the way, wasn't all that impressive. A few places it looked great and other places it was quite bad. Anyways, this wasn't really all that worth my time, but I didn't hate it and I guess I survived this earthquake without major brain damage...

This one's right down the middle for me, it's just okay. Last time I tried watching this one I gave up after like 15-minutes. Haven't seen much of the Czech New Wave, but this ones at the bottom for me (from what I've seen at least). I prefer stuff like Marketa Lazarova and Valerie and her week of Wonders.
