Gone Baby Gone and Man on Fire seem to divide people, same with American Hustle although a lot of members would include it on their best of 2013 lists, so not really. Not seen anything bad about The Descendants or Mystic River though.

What I liked about Gone Baby Gone was I figured out the ending way before it came. That might be a negative about the movie, though. I've never cared to see it again.

And hated by the majority of mofo public
Maybe not in Mofo but overrall all of the films you mentioned are very popular, except from The Descendants maybe. I enjoyed all of those films but i thought some were quite weak, this is how i'd rank them -

1.The Descendants
2.Mystic River (one of my mums fav films)
3.American Hustle
4.Man on Fire
5.Gone Baby Gone

Also Sexy have you seen Three Kings? It's David O. Russell with Mark Wahlberg again (like Huckabees which I haven't seen).
I absolutely love The Three Kings but I don't know if it's one that SC would like.

Carnal Knowledge

7/10

It was good. I liked the performances from all the key players. I wanted more of a moving story, but that's ok as it was probably meant to be more of a character piece. I think I'd have to put The King of Marvin Gardens over it. I still have a few of Nicholsons to see from the 70s, namely Five Easy Pieces among others.

Atlantic City

This isn't a film meant to be entertaining, and I don't think it will be that memorable, but it's a very strong, solid film. Burt Lancaster is great in a role that was somewhat tough to watch. I'm use to him playing strong characters; here he plays sort of a pathetic type, a lower level underworld kind, and older fellow who never really made to where he thought he should, or gained the respect he craved. His character greatly reminded me of Al Pacino's character in Donnie Brascoe. In fact, this movie is full of hard luck characters who are just trying to make their way in life. When Lancaster's character finally does something significant, which would horrify a normal person, his reaction is elation. I also like the theme of characters coming together who normally wouldn't. It's the theme of lost souls finding a common ground, something that I think happens often in real life. That's what I believe is the central theme in one of my favorite movies, Leaving Las Vegas. It works here on a smaller scale.

Kakarot89: The Infamous Thread Killer
You're Next

It had an interesting premise but I found it was extremely predictable.

2/5

Blackfish

An interesting documentary about killer whales.

3/5

Pi

This was a really interesting movie but I felt so much more could have been done with it. Every time I expected a huge development it just sort of fell flat. Pretty good overall.

3/5

Dead Before Dawn (2012)

Okay, this one was really, really stupid; but it was one of those enjoyable stupid movies. I went into it expecting one of those lame stoner comedies (in the vein of Harold and Kumar or Napoleon Dynamite) but it had some genuinely funny bits.

3/5

I still need to see Atlantic City.
While it's very good, I'm not sure who I would recommend it to. I don't really know how to explain it. It worked for me because I've known so many people like these characters, and I've been in that seedy type of environment. I could relate to it pretty well.

I'm glad you at least thought it was good.

I personally prefer Carnal Knowledge over The King of Marvin Gardens, although I like the latter one a lot too. It's the dark comedy, the tylish directing by Mike Nichols and as you stated, the interesting character analyses that make the former one of my all time favorites.

I'm curious what you're going to think of Five Easy Pieces. I think there's a fair chance that you'll love it.

Watched half of American Hustle again and liked it a lot more. Will watch the rest tomorrow. A lot of it just went over my head the first time.

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom
(Justin Chadwick, 2013)

Biopics are often most successful when they focus on a certain period of time in a person's life. Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom does not take that approach. Instead it tries to cram an entire lifetime into a 146-minute movie. As a result, it comes across as an abbreviated history lesson, turning significant moments into bullet points. Idris Elba does a commendable job of straddling the line between acting and impersonating, and Naomie Harris gives a very good performance as Mandela's wife, but the movie itself is nothing more than average.

Enough Said
(Nicole Holofcener, 2013)

It's refreshing to see a romantic-comedy that tries to take a more realistic, mature approach to the subject matter instead of relying on clichés and corniness and melodrama. The movie doesn't always succeed, and it drags in spots, but it's still a head above most romantic-comedies. Julia Louis-Dreyfus and James Gandolfini (R.I.P., Tony Soprano!) exhibit genuine chemistry and elevate an average script into something more worthwhile.

Just saw Martin Scorsese's "Casino" - thought it was great. De Niro and Pesci are very good and it turns out to be a well crafted highly entertaining film.

The Man with Two Brains -
- Enjoyed it much more than i thought i would, im not the biggest fan of Steve Martin (Planes, Trains and Automobiles aside) but some really funny moments in this.

Forty Guns (1957) -

The Seasoning House -
- better than expected. Decent performance from lead actress and the gore and violence was pretty well done. Its pretty bleak though. It kind of reminds me of a mix between Martyrs and Frontiers, although not as good as either of them.

Oklahoma! -
- I appreciate that its a classic musical but its not really my thing.

The Conjuring

I haven't watched many ghost/possession movies over the last few years, because there seems to be too many of them. I picked this one out because of the reviews, and it was a good choice. I struggled with my rating for a while, wondering if it would be too high. It seemed a bit off that I would rate this the same as some all time classics that I enjoy. I decided that this movie deserved a high rating from me because I think it succeeded in everything it tried to accomplish, and because I think I got everything out of it that I could have. It kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time, and there's nothing else you can really ask for with this type of movie. It's made well and the acting is fine, especially by the children which I think is critical for this type of movie. It helped a lot that my wife enjoyed it just as much, or more, than I did. I wonder if I had watched it alone, if I would've had anywhere close to the same amout of interest or enjoyment. That's not in any way a knock on the movie; it's just a personal thing. I enjoy horrors and comedies more when I'm watching them with someone else.

2022 Mofo Fantasy Football Champ
The Straight Story- 7/10

A touching film from Lynch. It's good, but I expected more. I still prefer Lynch's The Elephant Man, but that is like comparing apples and oranges.

The Grand Budapest Hotel - 7/10

The story is really quite pointless. But there are more redeeming qualities than any other movie I've ever seen... so many cameo's from well known actors/actresses, so many bizzare and funny moments, generally bizzare sets and randomness.

Finished here. It's been fun.
Vivre Sa Vie
+

Not bad, but kind of underwhelming. It's well-filmed, and there are some good moments here. But the overall product is rather cold, and meandering.
