The Evil Dead

The Evil are very gory when they are Dead

Sam Rami gives us a gory good time in his first, feature-length film.

Cult-favorite Bruce Campbell gives the performance of his career as Ash Williams, also starring are Ellen Sandweiss, who plays the best deadite, as Sheryl. To round out the cast are Hal Delrich playing Scott, Theresa Tilly playing Shelly, and Betsy Baker as Linda, Ash’s girlfriend.

These five teens go to a cabin for a weekend getaway that Scott bought cheap (Gee, I wonder why?) But while exploring the cabin’s basement with Ash, they find three objects, a shotgun, a tape recorder, and an ancient book bound in flesh and written in blood. Yeah, that’s a good sign. Well, in true dumb teen fashion, they play the tape, which makes something evil come from the woods. Later that day Cheryl decides to check something outside, she thought she saw. But when the trees rape her. Yes, rape, I know. The evil manifests in her, and she becomes a deadite, now Ash must fight off his friends and sister who are becoming deadites, one by one.

I must give this film a ten because it has a great premise. Great gore. Great special effects. Great everything. Best horror movie ever made!

i love the tree rape. also, i like the beginning when they are unpacking the trunk. 'hey! hey! hey!'

a lot of things about this film tickle me.

good review!

A Clockwork Orange

Kubrick’s TRUE masterpiece

A Clockwork Orange is, to put it simply, one of the scariest movies ever made. I know a lot of people like Dr. Strangelove, but I must say this is one of the best films ever made.

Malcom McDowell gives an oscar-gypt’d performance as Alex de Large who, with his droogs, go out, rape, beat, and kill many people. When, Alex finds his droogs making plans about robbing a dairy behind his back, he feels threatened but go along with their plan. Then he attacks his droogs as they walk down a pier, saying that the sound of Beethoven from a passing car inspired his violence. We see them in a restaurant and Alex once again brings up the dairy robbery plan. At the dairy they try to convince the rich lady at the dairy to let her in but she gets suspicious and calls the police. When the cops arrive, Alex’s droogs betray him, knock him out, and run. To shorten his sentence Alex agrees to "aversion therapy" which seems to change him, or does it?

Rounding out the cast are Patrick Magee, Michael Bates, Warren Clarke, and John Clive.

I wish I could give this film a 6 out of 5 just for a revolutionary, directorial look, where Kubrick has many bad scenes accompanied by jolly music; where if we are to experience them as we should, we have to do it consciously, by realizing they are bad, and not because the director tells us so through the use of music and images. Just a terrific movie.

i like the rape scene in this one, too. [i know, sowwy!]

Casino

Sam 'Ace' Rothstein, a mob-connected casino operator in Las Vegas, attempts a civilized lifestyle with his money-conditional wife, Ginger. Nicky Santoro, a boyhood friend of Ace and now a Made-Man of the Mafia, arrives in town with an ambitious agenda of his own that soon disrupts Ace's life. Before long, Ginger and her long-time leeching lover Lester, along with Nicky's mistakes, causing problems

Before I start this review, I know that a bunch of you are worrying about the runtime (1 minute short of 3 hours.) I must say that there wasn’t a boring second in it. All of the scenes were entertaining and powerful, you won’t need your fast forward button.

With that said and done, I really loved the acting in this. As you all probably know, Sharon Stone received her first Oscar nomination for the role of Ginger, but I wouldn’t be surprised if you came up to me and said that Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci each received Oscars for their performances. They worked very well together when they fought, which makes me think about what the behind the scenes were like. Even the famous insult comic Don Rickels, who half the time sits there and looks cool, he does it well. I’m not saying Oscar-well but well enough. Finally, there was James Woods playing the crack addicted ex-boyfriend of Ginger, he does respectable, all making for a great ensemble cast.

This is my favorite Martin Scorsese movie, and with a career like his, that is saying something. I loved the voiceovers were done very well. I especially loved how it cut off when once character dies while giving a voice over, nice touch. Another thing I liked about the directing was when a character would say a place and we would have a flashback; the subtitles would tell you exactly where you were from what the character said. For instance one time Nicky says “back home a long time ago” then the flashback comes and the subtitle will literally tell you “back home a long time ago.” Martin especially cut and moved the camera very well, the cuts were put together in a logical sense and there were some very memorable camera shots. Job well done.

The script from Nicholas Pileggi (who wrote the book this movie is based on) with some help from Martin Scorsese was also well done. I loved the way they wrote in the things that Nicky did to avoid the cops, which with some research really made sense. I also liked that it was written in a casual manner. There was an insane amount of “f” words, but you barely notice them. That is how well the non-“f” words were written.

Finally the cinematography from Robert Richardson was very good. Without sounding too childish, The lights in the casino were very pretty and the desert looked very good. All very well shot.

Rating:
Scorsese doesn’t get better than this.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

It's the story of a cartoon character named Roger Rabbit who exists along side of real humans. Eventually, it is revealed that Marvin Acme, the owner of the Acme Company and of Toontown, has been murdered! But all fingers point to Roger Rabbit, a Toon star at Maroon Cartoons. But unfortunately the only person who can prove Roger's innocence is Toon hating Eddie Valiant, a washed-up, alcoholic private detective who is reluctantly forced into helping when Roger hides in his apartment. It's up to Eddie to clear Roger's name and find the real evildoer before the villainous, power-hungry Judge Doom goes on a mission to bring Roger to justice!

This was one of the most fun and entertaining movies I have seen in a long time, just what I needed in the hospital. Half of that fun was watching the WB characters mixing it up with Disney characters. Primarily seen in the Daffy Duck vs. Donald Duck piano fight, which was fun and entertaining to watch, to many people don’t talk about Mickey Mouse meeting with Bugs Bunny, which for my money was one of the greatest scenes in the entire movie.

Another part I loved was the characters. Roger Rabbit was hilarious, especially with all of his cartoon gags, Eddie Valiant was sympathetic and you felt for him in his lose of his brother. Jessica Rabbit, made you want to, well, this is a family site so I can’t say it. Christopher Lloyd’s character was just an awesome villain.

My third favorite part of this movie was something you don’t exactly hear thrown around in other reviews, but much of the credit to this movie goes to Barbra Hudson. She cast this movie perfectly. I can’t see anyone doing Eddie Valiant’s character other than Bob Hoskins, or anyone else doing Roger Rabbit’s voice other than Charles Fleischer.

This film deserves another big point in my book because it basically combined three genres. It combined the seemingly unconnected animation, film-noir, and a buddy film. I don’t think anyone could have combined these three genres other than Jeffrey Price. I believe that if anyone else did it we would have Mickey Mouse in prohibition shooting it out with Al Capone.

The sets and costumes were good. They really took me to the 1940’s. Eddie Valiant looked like a real P.I., Christopher Lloyd looked creepy, and Jessica Rabbit looked . The sets were very good and from what I have seen on the History Channel, looked pretty accurate.

Rating:
this is DEFINETLY going into my new top 100, coming in April.

Not to mention the freeway idea was hilarious.

28 days...6 hours...42 minutes...12 seconds
Casino isn't my favourite Scorsese film, but it is one of his better ones.

Great reviews mate.

The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada

In Texas nearby the border of Mexico, the newcomer arrogant border patrolman Mike Norton mistakenly kills the Mexican cowboy Melquiades Estrada and buries him in the desert. When Melquiades's body is accidentally found one week later, his best friend, the ranch foreman Pete Perkins, claims the body to fulfill his promise and bury Melquiades in his hometown Jimenez and presses the local sheriff Belmont to find the killer. However, Melquiades is not delivered to Pete because he is not his relative, and his body is reburied in the local cemetery. When Rachel discloses the identity of the killer, Pete kidnaps Mike and forces him to dig the grave and bring the body to Melquiades's family in Mexico. While in their journey to Mexico, the sad reality of the hopeless Mexicans that live in the proximity of the border with USA is disclosed

The first and foremost thing I must talk about in this movie is the directing, my main reason for seeing this. How does Tommy "Agent K" Lee Jones do in his directorial debut? Well, it was nothing special. In the beginning of the movie it is set up pretty poorly together. I was confused in most parts. It did get better by the journey part of the movie, and less confusing. I also didn’t like when it said "The First Burial of Melquiades Estrada" and it would have spanish subtitles on the bottom. I can understand the intended effect, but if I wanted it, I would have selected it on the DVD menu.

The second thing is the risky part of a movie, a director casting himself in the lead role. Tommy Lee does respectable, but a nearly unknown Barry Pepper almost stole the show. I say it with a serious face when I say I think an Oscar should have been involved somewhere in what looks to be a promising career.

Now, this movie isn’t perfect, for instance I didn’t like the characters, not one bit. Barry Pepper’s Mike Norton character was pretty mean; the way he treats the Mexicans, his wife and people around him in general is despicable. Therefore the kindness people give back to him is undeserved. Making me question motives, and pretty much unreal, or at least the way I would act. Plus, you know how much I like back-story, we don’t know much of the characters, I don’t believe Pete Perkins’ past is ever mentioned, and all we know is Mike Norton is from Cincinnati.

The cinematography by 2-time Oscar winner Chris Menges was very good. I have great appreciation for the beautiful landscapes.

Finally, the music, it’s not that I didn’t like it, it’s just that it wasn’t as good as I thought it could have been, most of the time it was irritating. It was like the rest of the movie, good not great.

good; not great.

Bright light. Bright light. Uh oh.
Considering that some of your review is almost as incomprehensible as you say parts of the movie are, I'd say that was a pretty good review! HA!

HOLY CRAP! I found this My first review...ever

ok so I review differently I just list what I thought are pros of the movie cons of the movie, people who would like it, people who wouldn't like it, and if I think if it was good

ok so first up Killer Klowns from Outer Space

Plot: (copied from Imdb)
When a small town is invaded by aliens from outer space who are capturing and killing the townspeople, no one takes them seriously. Why? The aliens all look like circus clowns, use weapons that look clown like, and all have painted on smiles. Only a few of the young people in the town realize the danger and of course no one believes them. Armed with an ice cream truck they try and rescue their friends. Written by John Vogel

Pros:
-It's a B-movie that KNOWS it is a B-movie. (So it takes it becomes outlandish)(and I love that)

- The costumes look like clowns but not too much. (So it is beliveable that they could be from space.)

-The end deathe was just stupid enough to be cool. (I mean, he stabs him with a badge in the nose, what could be cooler?)

Cons:

- Bad reputation for being a horror movie. It isn't scary. (I mean cotten candy ray guns, who is going to be afraid of that?)

-It is too outlandish in parts. (Like when they just jump up in the air and fly, grab gloves and literally knocks a guys block off, I mean if the klowns where that powerful, why did they use guns? lol)

-umm ......... I can't think of one I LOVE THIS MOVIE!

People who would like it:

-Traditional B-movie fans. (Because it is one)

-People who love "Out-there" sci-fi. (because it is WAY out there)

-People who are afraid of clowns, (because the clowns die!)

People who wouldn't like it:

-
Non B-movie fans- ummm hello with a name like Killer Klowns from Outer Space what do you expect.

-People who love Scientific fact... again look at the name!

-People who don't like cussing , there is some but mainy, rude phrases (like the "Like a Stick")

VERDICT: YES
