The MoFo Top 100 of the 2010s Countdown

You can't make a rainbow without a little rain.
I saw The Martian a few years ago, and I liked it. I didn't get a chance to rewatch it for this countdown, but from what I remember about it, I don't think it would have made my list anyway.

I watched The Turin Horse for a movie tournament a while back, and if I remember correctly, I didn't like it.

Welcome to the human race...
No votes. I saw The Martian once in theatres, wasn't too impressed, and have barely thought about it since - I guess it's probably a hot take to say that I prefer Prometheus and Alien: Covenant as far as Scott's 2010s space movies go. I only just saw The Turin Horse a few days before voting closed on the countdown and, while I liked it a lot (probably the most I've liked any film to make the list so far), I figured I couldn't vote for something I'd watched so recently. I can easily see it shaping up to be one of my favourite films of the 2010s as time goes on.

Watched Hereditary, It Follows, and Certified Copy today. None of them are up my alley, but I found It Follows the most watchable by far.

Also put a hold on Anomalisa at the library. No idea where I'm going to find The Turin Horse.

I forgot the opening line.
I don't think it's going to make the countdown, but all I can think of as far as #80 is concerned is The Beaver. I hope I think of something else.

I'll go with A Ghost Story for #79, because in it someone loses their other half.

I forgot the opening line.
82. The Martian - This is a good movie, but I felt it could have been better. I wait and wait for films that accurately depict what the exploration of Mars by humans would look like, but inevitably most of them let me down. Does anybody remember the Brian De Palma film, Mission to Mars? I was so disappointed I left the cinema angry. I knew this would be more authentic and down to earth (so to speak) - but it seems my sense of wonder is only ever going to be engaged when people finally do go there. I remember being excited to see Donald Glover, and the general plot, but this is a film that seriously needs to be watched again if I'm going to give anything but a very general description. I have the film on DVD and it's one I'm going to get back to one of these days. I don't bemoan it a place on the Countdown - especially in the lower levels.

The Turin Horse - Another one I haven't heard of. Looks fantastic, and looks to be a must-see, so I'll get onto that and will have definitely seen it come the end of '23. I haven't seen any of Béla Tarr's stuff.

Films on my radar : 1
Films I've never even heard about : 3

#93 - My #15 - It Follows (2014)
#96 - My #1 - Hereditary (2018)[/quote]

Looks like it's time to catch up before I fall too far behind. I saw both 1917 and Deadpool. There were some impressive shots in 1917, but overall I thought the film was rather average. A couple years ago Deadpool might have placed on my ballot, but I didn't even consider it when making my list for the Countdown.

I'm about 85% sure I've only seen the first two Toy Story films, and the images I've seen here for Toy Story 3 don't look familiar at all, so I'm guessing I haven't seen it. I'm completely unfamiliar with both Certified Copy and Turin Horse.

The Martian was on my list. I had it quite high too at #14, but I do worry that a rewatch might drop it down a few places. It does get extra credit for making me interested in reading the book it was based on though, as that is something I practically never do. However almost right out of the theatre I bought myself a copy, and I read it fairly quickly as well. I do recommend watching the film first, then reading the book since you'll get two enjoyable experiences, but going the other way around would probably make you disappointed in the film.

Seen: 12/20

My List: 4
03. The Raid (2011) - #100
14. The Martian (2015) - #82
15. Hereditary (2018) - #96
20. Cabin in the Woods (2011) -#88

The Martian was my 20. Loved the book & the movie did a good job covering it. Obviously it can't get everything from the book, but it was thoroughly enjoyable watch, & even good for rewatches.

Like Toy Story movies, but I prefer others from Pixar. Seen Certified Copy for the group watch. Never heard of Turin Horse. Doesn't seem like a movie I might enjoy.

Rango and The Big Short are my guesses but I'm terrible at these for this countdown

Edit: Maybe Marriage Story.

One thing I had a lot of fun with when I was writing all those countdown riddles was trying to find things that combined both films. It had the side effect of making them harder, too, since you could never be sure where one hint ended and the other began.
If I had the time I'd love to do one of these countdowns in the future, but there's not much need with the great job everyone does and I like the idea of the baton being passed on.

I love how the hints have become parts of these now, we have things we keep and things that change slightly with each host.

Just looking back over my Sixties thread now, I know this doesn't sound very humble but I'm actually super impressed with the job I did back then, I had great fun making the graphics and posts

The Turin Horse was my number 17. Really great film, typical Tarr. Bleak and mysterious but beautiful

The Martian - pretty solid opening 40 minutes but then just descends into an awful 'Bring him home' cliched Hollywood style claptrap film. Didn't like it at all.
