MoFo Top 100 Horror Movies: The List

Evil Dead 2 was originally on my shortlist, but I kept pushing it down and ended up replacing it with a film I don't think will make the Countdown now that we're in the top 25. I think when Army of Darkness showed up I mentioned how I used to like the second film in the series the most, but now I tend to gravitate towards the first one. I do still like all 3 films, but my opinion on them seems to change wildly upon rewatches.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is one of my favourites from the silent era, and its visual design is simply astonishing. I love German Expressionism, and this film is a prime example of it. I had Caligari on the lower end of my list at #22. I am glad that it placed higher than Nosferatu though, since even though Nosferatu is also a visually striking film, I do find it a bit boring.

Happened upon Evil Dead 2 while in school for animation nine years ago. At that point it was close to being my favorite movie (along with the second film in Leone's Dollar Trilogy) but that was before I'd seen a lot of other horror films. The engaging and creative story hit me right at that stage of my interests. All the hands-on gags, fully dug all that and it hit me as so refreshing next to all the tiresome digital work I was doing. In that way it acted as a bridge of sorts for how my preferences grew both in regards to media as well as closer towards horror cinema. Over time I'm not head over heels for it though I do arrive at valuing its bang as a film. Caligari's clearly a visually imaginative film which I enjoyed relatively well enough when I first viewed it on my own time. Then, a lot more recently, it was screened twice in my film studies classes, it's very much a "film school" movie. But then I'd come home and watch what I enjoy a lot more, usually posting about them in the Slash Vault, naturally. Good with both being on and I've got good vibes about Evil Dead 2, haven't watched it in a while though. Voted neither.

I love The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. It was one of the first silent movies apart from some comedies that I ever saw. I had no idea what to expect or anything about German expressionism, but I loved it at first sight. It was my #10 and it could have been higher.

My List:

1. The Omen (#35)
4. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) (#70)
8. Nosferatu (#27)
10. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (#25)
11. Diabolique (#75)
16. Peeping Tom (#54)
17. Bride of Frankenstein (#68)
18. Antichrist (#82)
19. Don’t Look Now (#64)
20. Hausu (#57)
23. Vampyr (#65)
25. Of Unknown Origin (1-pointer)

Has Let the Right One In gotten on the list yet? That's my favorite vampire movie, with my second being on the list: Bram Stoker's Dracula.

I'm fairly certain that Let the Right One In will make the top 10.

Geez, I hate to admit it...but I've not seen The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari. Perhaps I'll end up watching it when we do the MoFo Top 100 Films of the Silent Era
Wauw. I’ll be damned... We’ve had this discussion before but that was moslty concerning newer movies of which I’m not really that surprised about when it comes to you. but older ones? You live and breathe those man! I’m stunned you haven’t seen Caligari.

That would be awesome.

You can't make a rainbow without a little rain.
I watched the first Evil Dead movie for this countdown, and I tried to watch the second movie, (mainly because I like Bruce Campbell), but I just couldn't make it through Evil Dead 2.

I watched The Cabinet Of Dr Caligari a while back. (I think it was nominated in a HoF or movie tournament here.) It was a pretty good movie, but not good enough to make my list.

Welcome to the human race...
This marks the first instance of both films in a round being on my list.

Evil Dead II was my #3. Perhaps the prime example of how to balance horror and comedy, which gives it the edge over the films that bookend the trilogy. Despite not being the high voter, I daresay I like this more than KeyserCorleone does.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari was my #20. Admittedly, I only saw it in full for the first time last year and haven't re-watched it since then, but like all the best horror classics it is straight-up undeniable not just as an "academic" example of a groundbreaking and influential film but also as an experience in its own right. There was one other silent film on my list that I don't think is likely to show up at this rate but I'm glad this one did.

Repulsion is fantastic, glad it made it.
8. Nosferatu
11. The Bride of Frankenstein
12. Peeping Tom
15. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
16. Get Out
19. Saw
21. Freaks
22. A Quiet Place
23. Repulsion
24. The Babadook
25. The Invisible Man

That leaves 14 left for me, all of whom I think have a good chance of making it, although I'm not sure about my #18 and #20.

28 Days Later… #17 on my list, the Clara Darko video says it all really, near perfect zombie film with a great opening scene and score. Cillian Murphy is a boss, excellent performance. (check out 'Peaky Blinders' if you haven’t already.)

List so far:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6. The Others (# 38)

23. The Babadook (# 63)

24. The Birds (# 41)

25.

For a while I preferred 28 Weeks Later until Thursday Next nominated it for a HoF and I fell in love with it.

I didn't care for Repulsion.

2. The Devil's Rejects (#74)
5. Kill List (No Show)
8. The Last House on the Left (#90)
9. Near Dark (No Show)
10. Deep Red (#66)
11. Possession (#33)
15. 28 Days Later (#23)
16. Carrie (#45)
20. The Omen (#35)
22. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (#84)
23. Hellraiser (#53)

I didn't like 28 Days Later the first time I saw it, but I did warm up to it a bit when I rewatched it before 28 Weeks came out. I rewatched both of them a couple of years ago, and my opinion lowered again slightly, but more so for 28 Weeks. Not sure which one I prefer now. Maybe I'll give them another watch the next time I'm in the mood for something zombie related.

Thursday Next's Avatar
I never could get the hang of Thursdays.
YESSS! 28 Days Later was my #1 horror movie (my avatar might have given that away). Not a zom-com, but a... zom-rom? Zombies + romance? That could be a thing too. Really I think I like this because it's a combination of zombies and post-apocalyptic drama in the vein of Day of the Triffids or The Stand. I like Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris and Christopher Ecclestone. And even in the face of zombies, it is a very human evil that threatens the main characters in the end. Plus it's a good looking film. And

...with a happy ending.

Horror movies don't have to be a spiral into despair, they can be about survival, too.

(The less said about 28 Weeks Later, the better).
