Did you ever see Third Rock From the Sun? John Lithgow was a professor who was totally unorthodox in his classroom teaching.
I've never seen that. I do like him, but mostly from Harry and the Hendersons and The Manhatan Project.

The Hunt

- plenty of spoilers below -

Really heavy drama that I just finished rewatching. I must say I liked it more when I saw it first time. For me this is not kind of movie I like to revisit. If not for the HoF I probably wouldn't bother. We see Lucas living his life in a small community of Swedish country. He's just recovered from the divorce, dating a new girlfriend Nadja and looking forward for his son Marcus moving to his place. Then suddenly like a snap of fingers all this happiness is destroyed. Like a thunder strike out of the clear sky. He is accused of sexual abuse by one of the girls, Klara, he's taking care of as a kindergarten teacher. And to make it even more dramatic, Klara is a daughter of his best friend Theo. Here I must say, not very typical occupation for a man, but that is just me. And then the real hunt begins. Lucas is hunted by the whole community. No matter of the presumption of innocence. Klara has a really run-off fantasy and manages to connect more phenomena together and make up the story. And then the unstoppable train is moving fast towards a cliff to destroy everything with no mercy. Lucas is loosing his job, his friends, his dignity, his life. It was nice to see he didn't loose all and his family was helping him thru the situation. Very powerful scene comes to the screen and we see Lucas, all beaten up and messy to attend the Christmas services at the church and punching Theo and demanding to look at his eyes and tell what does he see? Then Theo comes to Lucas house and we see something that we might call reconciliation. At least close to it. It seemed more to me that Theo simply felt sorry for Lucas and their friendship. Theo didn't even bother to listen to his daughter when she confessed she just made it up. He was probably too tired to further analyze what she's got to say. Then we jump to a scene after one year and we see Lucas, Nadja and Marcus together visiting godfather as Marcus just received his hunting license and is about to become man. And then this mysterious shooter arrives and it is clearly stated the hunt is not concluded just yet.

This is a type of story that I really felt sorry for Lucas but at the same time I couldn't say a word against the community and how they were all reacting. I'm still not even sure what would be a statement of this movie. For me it was a good quality drama with a sensitive topic with an excellent execution, amazing acting, arts, cinema and whatnot. Great nomination Neiba!

Flesh+Blood (1985)
Dir. Paul Verhoeven
Starring: Rutger Hauer, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tom Burlinson

Films like Flesh and Blood are the non-magical counterparts to those sword and sorcery films I used to love watching in my teenage years. I don't find the more reality-based films quite as interesting, but I'm still just as happy to sit down and watch one as a guilty pleasure. I had seen Flesh and Blood many years ago, but all those explicit medieval action films had sort of blended together in my mind, so I have a hard time keeping them straight.

This actually turned out to be a little less brutal and graphic than I thought it would be, though I imagine it might be very shocking to audiences not expecting it. Despite a few scenes of savagery, the tone of the film is not particularly dark. It's light enough to be fun while not crossing the line into silliness or parody. It was an easy watch, which was aided by the fantastic looking costumes and sets.

One thing I actually found a bit confusing about this film was whether we were supposed to be rooting for Steven or Martin. I didn't really like Steven that much, and thought that he was woefully underdeveloped. Martin, on the other hand, was much more interesting and actually had a character arc. The film tries to play both sides without taking a particularly firm stance, but I don't think it's done as effectively as it could have been. As a whole it was still enjoyable to watch though, and I'm glad it was nominated because I might not have rewatched it otherwise.

I've always been interested in seeing this movie except that I can't stand Vincent Gallo. He is such a hideous looking creature, so filthy and greasy that I think he was shat out by accident. His parents must be in the Guiness Book of World Records as the most homely couple to ever grace the face of the earth. If he has any children, god forbid, they probably look like uglier versions of the Chucky doll. It wouldn't surprise me if one day he goes to prison for having sex with a skunk. He runs like a girl and has the eyes of a pug. I wish they'd finally pop out of his stinkin head so I don't have to see them again. I can actually smell him when I see him on the TV screen, and it's very unpleasant. I want to throw up every time I hear is name. He looks like he lives in a turd and rat infested sewer, and I feel like I need a shower every time I see his horrible face. I bet he's never taken a shower in his life, and I'm glad because he'd contaminate the earth's water supply. I can't even understand how he's allowed in public. I bet animals won't even go near him because of the foul stench. Besides that, I was looking forward to the movie.

I liked how it started out so I was into it right away. I'm not sure if Vincent Gallo gave a good performance, or if he's just great at playing a pathetic loser by being himself. It was perfect casting, except in reality, Christina Ricci would probably spit on him if he ever looked in her direction, as I'm sure any girl would. Ricci was awesome, as was Ben Gazzara in the unfortunate role as the loser's dad. I was a little disappointed in Anjelica Houston's performance. Jan-Michael Vincent was sure looking rough, but compared to the opposum like Gallo, he looked like Royalty. This movie very much surprised me because I ended up thinking it was hysterical. I pretty much laughed from start to finish. I also loved the gritty look to the film. I give none of the credit to Gallo. He either stole somebody else's ideas or he got very lucky. How dare he even put himself in the same room as Ricci or Arquette. He couldn't get a girl like those two under any circumstance. He looks like he was half beaten to death and they took a piece of his azzhole and gave him a new face.

I loved this review. I really did. This is the most entertained that I have been by anything on the internet in a long time. Why do I have to watch some supposedly goofy video of something that isn't even remotely funny when I can laugh out loud at the hate that cricket feels for Vincent Gallo? The hatred is so strong that it is almost beautiful. Thank you for this, cricket. Thank you for brightening up my day. I loved it!

The Hunt

It was interesting and well thought out how they established how this young girl would even know of such things, her brother showing her the porn pictures
When did this happen in there? I swear to God I do NOT remember it at all. I really don't. I watched the entire movie. I did not look away. I wasn't distracted by anything at all. I don't know how I missed it.

I really am interested as to when it was because I actually have two different theories as to why this girl would say what she did.

It happens pretty quickly. While at home, Klara's older brother and a friend show her an explicit photo as they run past her in the hallway. It was definitely before she implied that Lucas exposed himself to her, but I don't recall if it happened before or after Lucas rejected her feelings for him. I think it was after though.

The way I saw it was that Klara said what she did to try and hurt Lucas' feelings because he turned her down, not realizing the severity of what she was implying and what the consequences of those accusations would be. What theories did you have?

I believe the American DVD release of The Hunt is slightly different than the original theatrical version. According to the Parent's Guide on IMDB this scene is described:
From IMDB: A teenager views hardcore pornography and shows it to a small child. Images of penises and women with open mouths are shown.
However I did not see those images. What I seen was Klara's brother along with some friends laughing at something on his phone screen, which he then shows to Klara and she looks upset by it. I never saw what was on the screen.

You'd think that if a key scene like that is going to be censored, that they'd find some way to let the viewer know that pornographic images were being shared, like an added line as the brother runs off mentioning penises or something.

Save the Texas Prairie Chicken
A fine film, ruined by animal sadist Kim Ki-Duk. Unfortunately I seen the original version that included the most horrific animal torture scenes, rocks being crammed into the mouths of a fish, frog and snake.
How long was the version that you watched? I saw some stuff that I was very upset over, but I didn't see anything where he was cramming anything into their mouths. Thank God I didn't! The tying of the rocks onto their bodies was more than enough for me.

OK. Yeah, I don't remember that at all in there.

I 100% agree with you. I think it was because she was disappointed with Lucas and how he treated her. Her feelings were hurt and she said something bad about him. I think children know what they are saying is wrong when they say something like that (when they are falsely accusing someone) - or else they wouldn't say it - but there is no way they ever know the full extent of the effect that can happen when something like that is said.

And my theories?
WARNING: spoilers below
You knew something had to have happened to her because of what she knew and how she described a man to be in that situation.

So I figured it was possible that it was her brother. I know he was crying when they were doing whatever it was with the Christmas stuff. Part of me thought that maybe he felt guilty about something - I was really trying to come up with somebody. But then again, I figured that maybe, and most likely, he was just upset over his baby sister being treated that way.

And then I thought that maybe it was the godfather of Lucas' son. For one thing, he was the only one who stood by him. Now, I am not saying that made him guilty, but he seemed to be the one person who is certain about Lucas. Why? Unless he knows Lucas definitely didn't do anything, and that is because he was the guilty party. Second, the kids were all repeating the same thing about a basement and a tapestry, I guess. In the godfather's basement, I believe that was a tapestry hanging there when Lucas' son was looking over the photos.

That was why I thought those things. But when you bring up the picture situation, that kind of cancels my theories out, I guess.

1 hour 35 minutes. I found this info at IMDB under versions:

The local Korean version of this film is approximately 90 seconds longer than the International release; a sequence was removed near the end of the film (at about the 100-minute point). This is reflected in the DVD releases, as the Tartan R2 (UK) release and the Columbia/Tristar R1 (USA) release use the International cut of the film, while the Bitwin R3 (Korean) DVD uses the original cut.
SPOILER:
  • The missing sequence is placed just before the final shot of the film. After the shot of child monk in the rowboat, in the cut scenes the child monk is shown putting stones into the mouths of a fish, a frog, and a snake; these scenes emphasize the film's themes of the circularity of life. The film then continues to its final scene of the Buddha statue on the hill.

A couple of times some characters were doing something and having a good old chat, but there was little context as to why the characters were where they were, and why they were indded there together. Maybe some things were just lost in translation.
You might not remember now as it's been a month since you've seen The Marriage of Maria Braun, but do you recall any examples of this? I just finished rewatching the film and don't recall any scenes where I was confused as to why characters were in a specific place.

The first time in the ruins with Betti they're just there to reminisce. When Maria returns there with Willi, they're looking to see if that is where Betti is hiding after a heated arguement about the end of their relationship, which Betti is convinced was because of her weight. They're looking for her to make sure she is okay. That's how I understood it at least.

I didn't get any of that

But it makes sense.
