First two seasons are on HBO Max, and third season just started airing last night. Makes Mondays all the more tolerable now.
Neither the movie nor the series follow the graphic novel, but I say that's a good thing. The series is good, though, especially since Sean Bean joined in S2. Hasn't lost his head yet, so that bodes well.
So it is a prequel? Like of how civilization ended up on a train? Or is it a reset of the movie? After the movie?

I liked the movie well enough but blindly dismissed the series as I couldn't figure how or why it was necessary to exist as the movie seemed well enough self-contained.

It's better than the movie (which doesn't require much). S1 was almost good, S2 was a step-down, and hopefully (not really expecting, though) S3 will be better again.
