I really really doubt it's a coincidence that both the users who just commented joined the site after the current mobile version was setup.

The following will not be satisfying, and everyone who ever hears it says "no, that's not why!" but...it's a truism among developers that people hate anything they're not used to or anything which feels scaled down, even if it should be. They always prefer the difficult but familiar to the easier but new. In this case that'd be something like constantly pinching to zoom in and out, which is obviously terrible from a usability standpoint, but is something people have just priced in as the cost of using mobile.

This may or may not answer your question, but in terms of total traffic it's about 50/50 between mobile and desktop these days. Obviously the mobile share has gone way, way up the last few years.
It wouldn't surprise me if the percentage of regulars on desktop was significantly higher, though, if that's what you're wondering.
