It really does come down to whether or not you critically engage a film on that level to the point of reaching that conclusion when it doesn't get explicit about it (which, as noted, is more often the case than not). Perhaps more importantly, there's also the matter of whether or not you ultimately factor such subtext into your overall appreciation (or lack thereof) of the film.

I saw Gran Torino twice in theatres and remember liking it, but who knows what I'd make of it if I ever re-watched it.
