For me the really big red flag is when someone apologizes for their behavior...and then later argues that it should be okay. That shows that either the apology was disingenuous, or that their promises go out the window when they're angry/upset/whatever. And from a moderation perspective, there's no meaningful difference between someone who's actively manipulative and someone with no self-control.
