I don't think it got the audience it needed at the time to continue forward. Unsure of how costly the show was (it didn't have a lot of special effects, after all), but for some reason HBO pulled the plug. AT THE WORST MOMENT POSSIBLE.

They did similar things with Deadwood and Rome, IMHO, although not as badly. And there was enough clamor over the milquetoast ending to Deadwood after season 3 that they did finally make a wrap-up movie in 2019. And the movie did a good job of satisfying a lot of the qualms I had about how the series ended in 2006. Thirteen years later, I could let it go.

I rewatch so many HBO series time and again, including these (especially Deadwood). Sticking the landing in a series finale is so vital.
