Armageddon or The Rock would be a good starting point for Criterion. Those two are pretty good entry level arthouse films that would give you a couple of cornerstones if you plan to delve further into the Criterion canon.

Nah seriously of the ones i've seen: Seven Samurai, 400 Blows, M, Taste of Cherry, Kwaidan, Black Narcissus, A Woman Under The Influence, Le Samourai In The Mood For Love and Ratcatcher are a few that i don't think are that difficult since you are starting out with those types of films. I've only seen a fifth of them though so i'm probably not the person to ask.
