Last desktop PC I had was a Sandy Bridge chip.

I wouldn't mind having a Kaby Lake chip.

Need more specs on the desktop. More than likely you wouldn't notice a big difference except with loading the OS and opening programs.
I have a 4670k at 4.2GHZ, which is as quick as the Haswells got. It's ripping and encoding to an SSD.

I'll give BDRebuilder a try, thanks. There were a few programs which got recommended to me instead of Handbrake when I was converting DVDs but I always found myself going back. Recent updates especially have made it a hell of a tool.

Also, I don't know what drive you're ripping to but it wouldn't hurt to pick up a SSD to use. Help speed up the read/write.

And an i7, depending on the generation of your i5, could easily knock an hour or two off your encode time.
Yeah, Handbrake can't handle that decoding process for Blu-Ray. And btw, I hear THIS is faster than Handbrake. Might want to give it a shot.
FFS!! When a customer thanks you for your refreshing honesty and great service...and then leans in to whisper "I love you, but Jesus loves you more". AGSDHJAGSHDJGADSHJGSDHJG!!!! GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
It's ripped to the HD first, then encoded from there with Handbrake. Handbrake doesn't seem to be able to encode BDs from disc as it can with DVDs.
