It's a franchise where the third movie is about a world where all the water has dried up and the fourth movie is about reaching a boat in the middle of the ocean. It's not so much coherent as it is good at proving why literal coherency is not the be-all and end-all of what makes films worthwhile.

Say what you will but Resident Evil is one of the most coherent franchises ever. I’ve only done it once but watching then from end to end is pretty awesome to behold. That alone makes me forgive a large portion of their missteps.
There was a Mission: Impossible game on the Nintendo 64. Always wanted to play it, but never did.
Yeah, it is pretty much a mix of all those classic spy and assassin tropes but the craftsmanship is key. Adaptations of games into movies (or vice versa) seem to imply that whoever's doing the adapting is free to coast on the brand and not make something authentically good (also the reductive idea of games as being purely about action to the point to the point where non-action games get turned into action movies, even if Resident Evil managed to be decent regardless).
