That being said, I didn't think too highly of the movie itself. I was mainly referencing the fact that he happened to star in the last two BP winners and it was always possible that the Academy would go for a hat-trick, but I don't think that's too likely now. Not sure Keaton really puts in a stellar performance, either, but what do I know.
Ah, my mistake. I just took a quick glance at the IMDb page and was wondering why nobody else was talking about it. Just seems weird for Australia to get it early since a lot of the prestige/independent/what-have-you stuff comes out much later here (if at all). We don't get, say, Manchester by the Sea until February.
As for Keaton's chances of getting a Best Actor nom, that category is always the most crowded field, so it'll be tough. But certainly possible.
Not that The Founder is likely to do anywhere near that kind of money, just pointing out that holding back a wide opening until after the new year begins is common.
And it not unusual for studios to do this with pictures at the wend of the year. The biggest gamble that paid off, in box office terms and for major nominations, was Eastwood's "American Sniper" a couple years back. It didn't get wide release until the week the Oscar nominations were announced: it got six nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor, and a surprising and astounding $90-million its wide opening weekend, on way to $350-million in the U.S.
The Founder is getting the requisite L.A./NYC screenings before the end of the year, to qualify for Oscar consideration.

Best Actor is always a crowded field. No telling if Keaton breaks through, or not? We'll know in about six weeks.
On further consideration, I guess the powers that be aren't banking on it being an awards contender. So much for Keaton being a good-luck charm.
Just noticed that The Founder doesn't get a proper U.S. release until January 2017 so Australia ended up getting it a full two months earlier. Wonder what the logic is there.
