Agreed. I rewatched it a few months ago and was very pleasantly surprised to see just how well it's stood the test of time. Acting still terrific (and casting). Story still has a punch to it. And the effects were just right: not cheesy and not overdone, either.

The timing as well is perfect.
Modern movies skip the foreplay and go straight for the jugular.
There's nothing overtly gory in that whole movie (well, the swimming pool scene is a bit ghastly), but somehow that whole movie simmers just under the surface all the way through.
Yeah it balanced the mystery at the start, then the action in the middle, with the gooeyness at the end yet still keep its dignity even up to the end of act 3.

A lot of movies go for the scare factor straight out, and then turn gory or jump-scare reliant within 25 minutes and have little to no shame in being nothing but jump-scare-factories and full on CGI, for 90 minutes.

I think the Poltergeist remake summed up modern movies pretty good.
All CGI and greenscreen, and totally devoid of anything remotely memorable.

Those do pack a punch. Just a few kept me awake all night.

No, no Cinnabon or pretzels or ice cream today. I spent too much on movies to be able to afford those.
