Ask your grandparents. My mom (who is 80) has vivid memories of the 1940s when she was wearing potato sack dresses. She was born in 1939, so at the tail end of the true poverty, but they were still hanging on to those issues when she was a little girl.

It's sobering, and it makes me never complain that my smartphone is ancient at three years old.
