The Shoutbox
I prefer Charlie Kaufman to Woody Allen when it comes to directors who make movies with neurotic protagonists.
Re quasi-realism: that’s the best way to explain why I don’t like his movies. Life is boring, so watching a movie pretty close to how life goes is like peak boredom.
THAT RHYMES WITH P AND THAT STAND... wait. ok that's backwards. TROUBLE!!! TROUBLE!!! TROUBLE!!! RIGHT HERE IN MOFO CITY!!!! TORUBLE TURFORFL!!!!!!

I've seen and enjoyed a few of Allen's films (Manhattan, especially), but I'm not sure if I'll be able to return to it for a long time given his scandal. I'm normally able to put that stuff behind me when I watch films from controversial directors (Roman Polanski, for instance), but given that Manhattan is about Allen being in a romance with someone much younger than him (something which is eerily similar to what his real life scandal was about) makes it a much harder pill to swallow. I can see myself returning to Annie Hall in the future though.

Just to name a few of his early films that I loved. Some people don’t get his films, and that’s fine.
I’m ambivalent. The whole scandal thing didn’t affect my perception of him at all. I was never a huge fan but ‘Annie Hall’ was great.

yeah and i'm trying to figure out why. it didn't help that pre 90s he was also in front of the camera in a lot of his films, and i've always found his presence to be SO smarmy and pretentious.

anyway, this was more of an excuse for me to rant. idk that i'll ever figure it out.
I don’t think there is anything I can say to “convince” you of his early genius. Love & Death, Annie Hall, Stardust Memories. Just to make a few

Pre 1990’s (pre scandal) Allen was a force to be reckoned with. He had a few other hits after that time but to me, he’ll probably never reach those same heights.
