I've seen and enjoyed a few of Allen's films (Manhattan, especially), but I'm not sure if I'll be able to return to it for a long time given his scandal. I'm normally able to put that stuff behind me when I watch films from controversial directors (Roman Polanski, for instance), but given that Manhattan is about Allen being in a romance with someone much younger than him (something which is eerily similar to what his real life scandal was about) makes it a much harder pill to swallow. I can see myself returning to Annie Hall in the future though.

Just to name a few of his early films that I loved. Some people donít get his films, and thatís fine.
Iím ambivalent. The whole scandal thing didnít affect my perception of him at all. I was never a huge fan but ĎAnnie Hallí was great.

yeah and i'm trying to figure out why. it didn't help that pre 90s he was also in front of the camera in a lot of his films, and i've always found his presence to be SO smarmy and pretentious.

anyway, this was more of an excuse for me to rant. idk that i'll ever figure it out.
I donít think there is anything I can say to ďconvinceĒ you of his early genius. Love & Death, Annie Hall, Stardust Memories. Just to make a few

Pre 1990ís (pre scandal) Allen was a force to be reckoned with. He had a few other hits after that time but to me, heíll probably never reach those same heights.
I think a lot of the praise has to do with the feeling that he kind of invented a style of film, with its quasi-realism and emphasis on the ins and outs of adult relationships. Like, this might sound weird, but I'm not sure we have Kevin Smith without Woody Allen. I think there's a lot of influence in naturalistic (or, to be fair, naturalistic feeling, relative to mostm ovies) dialogue.
Well, most of them are utterly forgettable, especially these days. But I was always a little confused by the level of love for Annie Hall and Manhattan both. I guess I can appreciate some of the meta stuff in the former, though.

Loved Midnight in Paris, however.
