I skip them unless it's been a long time (which is rare). Not just because of the above, but because it basically tells you which dangling plot threads are about to come up again, if they ever were.
If you're like me you'll use that 14 day grace period to take the first 12 days off and then rush the prep in the last two.
Meeting I wasn't ready for got put off for 2 weeks. Suddenly my day is looking up.

They don’t have to be soaps — I like to pay attention so usually even with something like ‘True Detective’ if you missed one episode, that ruins the flow.

It is already here. I've watched shows with the Skip Recap button just this week.

Same here but only when binging tho.. If there's a whole week between the episodes it can be handy for details you might have forgotten from last weeks episode.
