Oh, and earlier this year when Carly was asked for the zillionth time by a reporter, she jokingly revealed the secret subject of the song was Mark Felt.
Kristofferson and Carly briefly dated as well.
A couple other guesses are singer Cat Stevens (way back in his pre-Muslim days) and William Donaldson.
Donaldson was a writer and rather infamous playboy. In the late '60s he and Carly were engaged, but it was broken off after he kept up having numerous affairs.
Because the British Donaldson isn't as famous today as Beatty, Jagger and the others nobody thinks much about him, but based on his inherited wealth that he flashed around and his known infidelity plus the way he treated Carly, he's really a very good and logical guess.

I somehow don't think it's James Taylor. I didn't think he was her ex already at that point in time, was he? I'd heard the Jagger possibility, but hadn't heard Kristofferson. (How do they know each other?) Didn't know about the auction. Fascinating!

The high bid on the secret was $50,000.00. The winner was NBC executive Dick Ebersol. He is, theoretically, the only person outside of Simon's immediate family and closest circle of friends to know the answer for sure.
The only catch to the auction was that the winner was bound not to tell anybody else.
