Cigarettes is a false equivalence.

For sure, US made their fair share of silly stuff. Some work. Some don’t. But you can’t criticize the Us industry for it while ignoring or praising Japan or Hong Kong for the same thing. And there’s enough to go around there.
Outside of the 70’s, I’d also say the 20’s and 30’s were very big.
Spielberg is a master. He does what Hark does, only better 😉
They did get it briefly in the 70s but then the blockbusters and silly stuff entered the scene. I blame Spielbeeg and 1980s boomer economic wonder.
Most of the world accepted Marvel or smoking cigarettes too.
