Yes. The End is funny, definitely underrated by in large...but it's also not that funny. Above average, but not the best comedy even of that year much less the decade ('78 also saw Animal House, Foul Play, California Suite and The Cheap Detective, for starters).
It certainly would have done Burt's career better in the long run to do many more movies like The End, Starting Over and Sharky's Machine instead of the Cannonball Run flicks, the Smokey & the Bandit sequel and Stroker Ace. But alas, that's why he's the living joke he is today.
