My fellow Americans and others, which Oscar nominees have you seen?

I am trying to see all the Oscar nominees before the Academy Awards. I started this yesterday and saw The Substance which I really enjoyed and I didn't think the blood bath at the end was overdone. I thought it was appropriate. I felt the movie was less about cosmetic surgery and more about the narcissism that our insane media, social, TV, movies, promulgate. Tonight I am going to a local AMC to see The Brutalist.

Anyway, I would like to hear which you have seen and what you thought of them.

I have also seen Conclave, Anora (which I liked a lot), A Complete Unknown (which I liked also), Nosferatu (also a good movie) Wicked (kind of a snooze), & A Real Pain (it made look forward to whatever Jesse Eisenberg does next.)

Anyway post your list and any reviews you got.

The Brutalist 9/10 one of the best films of the year
Emilia Pérez 6/10 a flawed mess with a couple good performances
Wicked 9/10 fun and entertaining
Anora 9/10 excellent film with good performances
Conclave 9/10 well acted film, great case, excellent screenplay
Dune: Part Two 8/10 very well directed, a technical achievement
The Substance 9/10 wildly entertaining, Demi Moore is fantastic
The Apprentice 8/10 entertaining, good performances
A Real Pain 9/10 excellent performances, great screenplay
Gladiator II 8/10 pretty entertaining
Nosferatu 7/10 good cinematography and production design, but too long
A Different Man 8/10 very good performances
The Wild Robot 8/10 fantastic animation
A Lien 7/10 well acted, gripping
I’m Not a Robot 8/10 enjoyable, funny
The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent 6/10 just alright
In the Shadow of the Cypress 6/10 some interesting visuals, not everything worked for me
Wander to Wonder 6/10 some good animation, story not that interesting
The Six Triple Eight 8/10 effective and engaging
Elton John: Never Too Late 7/10 enjoyable but a little too basic
Sugarcane 7/10 some powerful individual moments, but some flaws
I Am Ready, Warden 7/10 fine, but could have gone more in depth
Incident 8/10 powerful and disturbing
Instruments of a Beating Heart 7/10 cute and entertaining
The Only Girl in the Orchestra 7/10 nice, could have been more in depth
The Girl with the Needle 8/10 excellent performances, fantastic cinematography
Flow 9/10 loved the animation, Cat is wonderful
Inside Out 2 9/10 my favourite film of 2024, joyful, beautiful, relatable
Memoir of a Snail 5/10 heavy handed, manipulative and too over the top
Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl 9/10 fun, love the characters
Maria 6/10 too slow, nice costumes
Alien: Romulus 6/10 doesn't do enough to stand out
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes 6/10, action and effects were good, story was not

I’ve seen 10 noms so far. The Substance probably being my favorite watch.

I plan on watching a bunch more although I’m gonna be very busy these coming days.

So far I have seen three Best Picture nomminees, 3 Best Actress nominees, one supporting actor nominee, two supporting actress nominees, and 2 Best Director nominees

Do you have any predictions as to who will win?

None.
But I'm gonna go ahead and bet my life-savings on Chalamet to win since playing a Boomer-favorite in a Biopic is a guaranteed Oscar.

I don't feel I've seen enough nominees yet to make any kind of intelligent predictions.

I really liked The Substance and A Real Pain

I'm at 48%, with 24 seen, the majority of those are shorts.

Of the Best pics, only seen Emilia Pérez, which was near unwatchable, Dune Part Two, which is not my thing, books or movies, I don't know why I bothered with it, and The Substance, which was 3-star decent, but not best picture level.

Watched A Real Pain, and yikes, I did not like, did not find it convincing at all - but my movie pals are all, "YAY, we love it!" The hell? I feel like I'm living in Bizarro World.

So yeah, not a lot to thrill me so far.

There are several at 3.5 (Sugarcane, Inside Out 2, Magic Candies, Beautiful Men, Yuck) and a whole lotta 3s (The Wild Robot, and Memoir of a Snail to name 2)

I always suck at predicting stuff like this. Especially since I feel like the Academy always find a weird darling to take it all.

But without having read up on polls or predictions, I’d say Best Picture to The Brutalist or, a wild card pick, Anora.

Insulated, rich, nepotistic to the core, basking in luxury beliefs only the wealthiest can afford, the august members of this academy gave Will Smith a standing ovation after he smacked the taste out of Chris Rock's mouth. I don't know that I will ever again be capable of caring what accolades they shower upon themselves.

Think I've seen 8. With 'The Girl with the Needle' being the best.

I've seen Inside Out 2 and Memoir of a Snail. I intend to watch Flow and The Wild Robot at some point. No interest in any of the live action nominees.

Okay, now I’ve seen The Brutalist. Well made film, which kind of left a bad taste in my mouth. Adrien Brody is excellent as always. The score was quite effective. But the political messaging in films nowadays is so heavy handed. It just doesn’t work. There’s always been political messaging in movies but it just seems like the most blatant propaganda. Maybe it’s because the message is feel ashamed of any privilege you have, real or imagined. I feel as if there is some kind of oppression Olympics going on.
I was in an online conversation about the state of mental health medicine and finding a psychiatrist. A young Canadian man was kind of dismissive of the difficulties Americans have regarding this situation. I said that, he was in a privileged position coming from a country with universal health care. You would have thought I had slapped him in the face. He argued that his homosexuality trumped our lack of health care. I didn’t know it was a competition and I didn’t realize one’s sexuality had anything to do with one’s ability to find adequate healthcare in 2024..
