Demi and The Substance
Anybody think Demi Moore has a shot at a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for The Substance? I do.

Re: Demi and The Substance
Sure, she has a shot. It would be her first Academy Award nomination.
Demi's only Golden Globe nomination for feature film work came for Ghost in the Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical category. She lost to Julia Roberts' breakout in Pretty Woman, which was already her second Globe having won Supporting Actress the year before for Steel Magnolias. Julia made the Oscar cut for Pretty Woman, losing to Kathy Bates in Misery. |
Re: Demi and The Substance
Keeping my fingers crossed for her... and in the lead category.

I was thinking lead initially, but looking closer at her exact amount of screentime I'm not sure. Of course, Anthony Hopkins won a lead Oscar for an eighteen minute performance in Silence of the Lambs, but Moore is no Anthony Hopkins

Re: Demi and The Substance
There are no "rules" for what can be submitted as a lead versus a supporting performance at the Oscars. For a big enough star in a role that could reasonably be considered either, they go for the category that offers the best chance to win. For a recent example, Brad Pitt in Once Upon A Time in Hollywood. As a lead actor, probably doesn't win that. As Best Supporting, he wins it in a walk,
For this reason, I suspect Demi will be put forward as a Supporting Actress, increasing her chances at both the nomination and maybe even a win, depending on the other nominees. |
Congratulations to both Demi and Margaret for receiving Golden Globe nominations for The Substance

Re: Demi and The Substance
The promotional efforts surrounding the film and her performance can also influence nominations, as visibility often matters in the awards race. So my answer is yes!!
