We have this thread where people post their top ten first-time viewings of the year. Still holding out until the end of the year before I post a new list, though.

Some of my favourite first time watches of 2020:
Beyond The Hills (2012) Sons of the Desert (1933) Henry Gamble’s Birthday Party (2015) Thank You and Good Night (1992) Me and You and Everyone We Know (2005) The Cameraman (1928) The House That Jack Built (2018) The Wise Kids (2011) Dolores Claiborne (1995) Fruitvale Station (2013) |
Rashomon
Wuthering Heights Parasite Prom Night 2: Hello Mary Lou Throne Of Blood Belle Du Jour Dark Passage Long Weekend Sword Of Doom The Big Sleep These were all somewhere between good and great. I also went back and watched all the Friday the 13th movies I had never bothered to watch, which included 5, 7, 8, and 9. None were good but there is a certain garbage-can level of charm. There were more but few notables. |
Re: Movies you watched for the first time in 2020 and really enjoyed
I didn't watch a ton of movies in 2020 compared to the years before, I'll try to correct that in 2021, but these are my A(-/+) for first time watches:
Metropolis (2001) (A) Reefer Madness (A) Falling Down (A-) The Neon Demon (A+) Gandahar (A-) Yojimbo (A) Raw (A) Edmond (A-) Relic (A) Videodrome (A) A Moment of Innocence (A) Lawnmower Man (A) |
Some movies I watched for the first time in 2020 that were released prior to 2019/2020:
The Blues Brothers The Awful Truth The Pink Panther (1963) The Muppets (2011) Help! The Hurricane Christmas in Connecticut Five Easy Pieces The Panic in Needle Park The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford The Shop Around the Corner |
Including the holdovers from 2019 that I saw this year, my list would look like this...
1. Paris, Texas 2. Moonlight 3. Parasite 4. Uncut Gems 5. 1917 6. The Handmaiden 7. Do The Right Thing 8. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 9. The Searchers 10. Drug War |

From the ones I remember watching last year I enjoyed Spartacus, The Chaser, The Spy Gone North, To Live and Die in LA and The Death of Stalin.
And the best of the lot was https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/i...P3M1w&usqp=CAU |
Whoops, forgot The Red Shoes.

What are your thoughts on Paris, Texas? I remember you mentioning you were meaning to check that film out some time ago. It's definitely great and glad that it topped your list!

Jojo Rabbit struck me with a mixture of irony and drama
