What do you think of The Great Silence (1968)?
 

I thought it was pretty good as I watching it, but then when the ending came, I found it to be perhaps too dark... Usually when there is a tragic ending, the story has something to say, or a message if you will. Here the tragedy just seemed completely random and arbitrary, with no point to make at all, leaving a really highly raised eyebrow at the end from me.

So I am not sure what to think of the movie on a first viewing, since it was so good until the ending, and it is very well made for sure. But what do you think?

I often like dark and tragic films so I have no complaints about the ending. As a whole it wasn't as good as I remembered (rewatched it few months ago) but still definitely one of the better spaghetti westerns.

Yeah usually I like dark endings, but here, I felt it didn't add up to much perhaps though. I also feel the romance may have been rushed and we do not see the two develop much before the sex scene.

It wasn't a real romance though. At least I assumed the sex was largely meant as a part of the payment. Her affection came more from his function than traditional love. And the ending isn't meant to add anything up, it just shows the world where "good" doesn't automatically triumph over "evil". It's a logical conclusion and I like it as such.

The ending is great - one of the more shocking ever.

Oh okay, but if the sex wasn't meant to be romantic, then how come she was all into him during it, and why did they play that emotional violin music, which suggests an intense emotional connection?
