kung fu movies

whats your fav kung fu movie?
any martial art movie can count

Kong 09-08-03 07:05 AM

Probably Hero; at least for the time being.

Mairosu 09-08-03 07:19 AM

I'll go with Jackie Chan's Project A here, followed by Tsui Hark's Once Upon a Time in China.

linespalsy 09-08-03 10:20 PM

for jackie chan it's project a or drunken master.

my overall favorites are 'iron monkey' and 'mr. vampire' though.

havent seen 'hero' yet, but cant wait, zhang yimou's movies are generally great, and i'm more than a little curious how this one turned out as it sounds like quite a departure for him.

This is my kind of post..
-Five Deadly Venoms of course
-Master of the Flying Guillotine was great, the weapon and the retro techno soundtrack sets it apart from the other 70s movies.
-All Bruce Lee movies are a given, especially The Chinese Connection
-I have to admit Hero was pretty damn good too, you can't go wrong with Zhang Ziyi (well forget about Rush Hour 2) or Jet Li.
-I thought Kiss of the Dragon was a huge exception to the Jet Li Hollywood rut
- Five Fingers of Death ( I assume this should be seen before Kill Bill if you are planning on it)
-Crouching Tiger was good, but without the hype.
-Jackie Chan's Drunken Master
-Jet Li's Fist of Legend, somewhat considered a remake of The Chinese Connection but I feel not as good the "original" Yuen Woo Ping is the choreographer of course.

I'm sorry but that's all i got :(

i agree with tuna that crouching tiger hidden dragon was really good, but without all the hype. i really loved the fight scene between the two women.. that was well done, and just very entertaining. the tree top chase scene was also very neat. chow yun fat rocks my socks too.

I would say that the role in CTHD was his worst though.

Of all the Chow characters, the one in CTHD is the least memorable. Totally devoid of the classic Chow charisma. He looks a bit restrained there...which I guess is also the effect of hastily learned mandarin specially for the shoot.

Revenant 09-09-03 07:21 PM

I've always been partial to Jackie Chan's 'Police story' and Jet-Li's 'The Legend'. Not necessarily the best films to showcase their talent but they were very entertaining.

Anything by Bruce Lee is an automatic classic.

DeMoN 09-09-03 07:36 PM

I love Kung Fu movies, and there are so many great ones out there.

Ok this is my list:

Once Upon A Time In China
The Fist Of Fury(I think this is named The Chinese Connection in the States)
Drunken Master
Armour Of God
Enter The Dragon
Meals On Wheels
Project A
Bloodsport
Blade(The Tsui Hark movie; not the vampire one)
Yojimbo
The Seven Samurai
The Barefoot Kid
Marked For Death
The Last Hurrah For Chivalry
The Legend Of Fong Sai Yuk
The One
Snake In The Eagle's Shadow

I think I will stop there, as you can see, I do like a hell of a lot. I have a massive collection, which I have accumulated over the years.

How are those three classified as "kung fu" ? Blade, okay, I can see that maybe, but Kurosawa's samurai films are nowhere near the kung fu genre.

And I believe you're right about the Fist of Fury

DeMoN 09-09-03 07:47 PM

I was generalising the whole Martial Arts genre, I didn't realise you wanted specific Kung Fu movies as I saw someone else mention a few Samurai movies. Sorry if I have annoyed you.

No, 'course not, not annoying me at all, but I think the topic at hand is just related to kung fu movies, and I thought maybe you got it wrong. All is good. Especially the movies you named. :p

Back on topic, anyone else saw Mr. Vampire apart from me and Linespalsy ?

Mairosu 09-09-03 07:59 PM

any martial art movie can count
Well colour me blind :modest:

Sorry for that.

Ahh I can't believe i forgot about this. It has such an amazing second half and some great plot turns which are always nice in a martial arts film. I was suprised to see that this was directed by John Woo who's famous for having his guns blazing rather than fists flying. I guess he had to start somewhere.

Well fairly recent, Dec 2002 I've heard, which was the release in Asia. It was supposed to come to theatres here November 5th or something but got shafted by Miramax like a bunch of movies are these days and no official date is there last I heard. I suggest you get a region 0 on ebay, got mine for about 10 bucks
