Why Are Your Favorite Movies Your Favorite?

Was something specific communicated to you? Are your favorites because of the theme? The writing? The actors? Acting? Emotion? Brain? Heart?

I think when it comes to American Psycho the reason I love it so much is the way the script is written. We see his personality and the way he acts, but nobody else really notices it. So it presents you with the question if it's negligence or that he's just imagining it in his head. Patrick Bateman is crying out for help the whole film, but nobody hears him because they are all trying to just benefit for themselves. It also is impeccably cast riddled with great performances that are all very memorable (at least for me). There is a magic in this film that you really never see in a lot of other films, especially nowadays, it captures a time of greed and shows us who are the real monsters: Bateman or the people who neglect to help him? A true masterpiece.

I think Sexy asked me why I liked The World According To Garp so much. It was the most unusual, and unpredictable story, but you believed every second. I was also like 12 or 13 when I saw it so the emotional impact was stronger.

Thank you so much for this, Matt72582!! Your question is spot on, and cuts to the quick regarding why West Side Story is my all time favorite film. Since I have posted other threads about the film West Side Story that go more into detail describing why this is my all time favorite film, I haven't elaborated nearly as much about that on this thread. I will say this, however: The theme, the emotions, the brains, and the heart, as well as much of the acting, dancing and the intensely brilliant latin-jazz-classical music score that goes along with this great classic, are all combined to make West Side Story the dynamic classic film that it really is.

Sure, there are other films that I like a great deal, which also have lots of heart, brains, emotions, etc., but none of them are as special, or hold the same special place in my heart regarding movies as West Side Story.

Once I remember hearing an ex actually saying "How did the waitress not notice that he said he wanted to kill her and play with her blood..." She didn't understand that this was clearly not the reality of the situation, and proceeded to take the rest of the film literally and batter me with questions of the same ilk. I told her to read the book and after she did we re-watched it and it made a lot more sense to her.

I agree with every word you typed sir, well put.

Last time I checked you didn't have any gorno or scat films in your top, so you're not weird!

I have no reason for having one of my films on my Top 10 list, it just appeared there. I swear I never added The Desperate Hours, but somehow it's there on my Top 10. Anybody ever have that happen to them?

Your subconscious self added it.

Inception immerses you into another world, the combination of score with visuals and interactions between the characters all driving the narrative is a recipe to get truly lost in. It is a masterpiece.
