Best Helicopter scenes on film
Im a huge fan of copters, with the release of APOCALYPSE NOW REDUEX and BLACK HAWK DOWN it got me thinking which are the best.
10 I totally dig are: THE GAUNTLET- Clint on a Harley hooting away from the bad guys in the copter BLUE THUNDER- Spying through the walls and chases through the concrete jungle SUPERMAN- The man of steel catches the whirly bird and the girl THE DEER HUNTER- rescue in the river THE HOT ROCK- he getaway man that can drive or fly anything THE MATRIX- smashing into the building T2- Robert Patrick oozes on into the cockpit DIE HARD- the top of the building blows and so does the FBI copter PREDATOR- Flying into the jungle FIRST BLOOD- Johnny Boy jumps off a massive cliff and still has a good throwing arm to take the huey down. |
Hah! As soon as I saw this topic I thought of Blue Thunder.
I remember watching that scene when I was like 12, I was like... "woah." One movie that I'll have to add to the list is Swordfish. The helicopter scene with the bus is pretty nice, even if it is fairly unrealistic. |

Thing, The (1982) - The Dog chase into the compound. One that always looks somewhat cool to me is... Godzilla (1998) in which they have the Apache's chasing him through New York. |
Some great ones listed here, for sure--the Apocalypse Now scene always gives me goosebumps.
This thread immediately made me think of "Airwolf" and Jan-Michael Vincent. I was awful young, but I loved that show... |

GoodFellas - Henry being followed by choppers all one long, horrible day
The Perfect Storm, with the helicopter rescue scenes. And another one I'd completely forgotten: ...And Justice for All -- more on the funny side of things. |
The flight with crazy Judge Jack Warden in And Justice for All... is a great one. Pacino is a terrific reactor.
And here's a great bit of a dialogue, but the movie it comes from doesn't actually contain any scenes with helicopters...
CAPTAIN (Alan Arkin): Oh, Tony, are you working on the forms on that street vending incident up on...
TONY GIARDINO (Anthony LaPaglia): Yes, Captain. CAPTAIN: Tony? Tony? Tony, I don't want to intrude, but you seem a little down. TONY: Well, Captain, it's about my job. CAPTAIN: Ah. TONY: I'm having doubts about being a cop. You know, it's not like how it is on TV. I mean, all I do all day is I fill out forms and paperwork, I mean, this is what I do. CAPTAIN: It's a point well taken, Tony, but you must understand, although it's not exciting, it is a very important part of our work. TONY: Yeah, but in all my times as a cop, I've never...I've never, like, chased a guy across a crowded city square. I've never hung on to that part of the helicopter. You know that part, underneath, the thing where it lands? Do you, do you know that part? CAPTAIN: Yes, I know that part. TONY: I've never hung onto that. - So I Married an Axe-Murderer I've always wanted to hang onto the skids of a helicopter too. Looks like fun, Man! |
Anthony LaPaglia was great in that movie--the scenes with the Chief are hilarious, and the scene where he tries to commandeer Charles Grodin's car. "You're not gonna bend on this commandeering thing, are you?" Great flick. Another hanging on "the thing where it lands" scene: The end of the first wish sequence in Bedazzled (the Brendan Frazer version). |
Spy Game, in the flashback, when Tyler Durden's character waits until AFTER the last second to plug his target, just after the helo gets out of the way. But that was due to bad flying on the part of the helo pilot.
And, later, I seem to remember he brings down the entire thing with a few AK-47 rounds. Definitely a cool scene. |

i'd say it is a tie in between the matrix crash and the full metal jacket line in the helicopter.

Austin Powers Forward Flipping over the helicopter in Goldmember, a tad unrealistic I realise but pretty cool nonetheless.

I thought black hawk down was a great movie with helicopters (hhhhheeee) . I used to live on a military base in California when helicopters would test their flights ever 20-30 mintues.
I like the Last Boy Scout too, i think that is the one i am thinking about. Some of the scenes from James Bond movies Charlies Angels had a good one too. |
