Buster Keaton's The Passionate Plumber. Need help again =)
Well, hello everybody! Was anyone missing me?))
So I returned with another Keaton-MGM movie – The Passionate Plumber. Hope you’ll help me again. Just as in my previous thread, I’m gonna upload some clips from that movie to YouTube and ask some (in fact, a great deal of =) ) questions about the scenes where I can’t fully recognize the dialogues. Well I express the great gratitude to christine for helping me that time. Maybe she’ll lend me her hand again. I was very upset hearing phrases in French, Spanish and even Italian (as far as I could get it) in this movie. Fortunately, there aren’t much of them. I hope someone will help me with these, too. Will be glad to have any assistance in my translation. So I start. Part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57ns6BrfQI0 Questions: 1) 0:05 – 0:08. Julius’ (it’s the name of Durante’s character here, while Keaton remained Elmer) conversation with the driver, full in French. 2) 0:21 – 0:36. The conversation with a Frenchman. It’s all in French too, of course. 3) 1:36 – 1:43. Two identical phrases in French. 4) 1:44 – 1:46. The phrase in Italian I think. 5) 1:53. After Elmer’s “No”. Is it “then who do I look like?”? 6) 2:15. Where’s Elmer from? 7) 2:26. Does Julius say “Argonne”? 8) 2:29. After Elmer’s “I’ve got an invention”. What does he say? Something like “It’s more than invention, see. It’s a shot spot pistol. You squeeze the handle and …… so you can see where you shoot at night”. 9) 2:49. Since Einstein discovered what? 10) 3:01. Does he say “is that good or is that good?”? If it’s so I’m not quite sure of the meaning. What is it? 11) 3:19 Everything from “always bathrooms”. |

jeez! twice as difficult! I might be able to do some of the French but someone else will have to do the other languages
1) Julius: Attendez (wait) I cant hear what the driver says it's too fast 2) Julius says Bonjour Monsieur several times but the Monsieur is terribly mispronounced! the owner says : Bonjour monsieur Julius: Ma baignoire fuit - my bathtub leaks! owner: I think he says Le vieux est dedans . Not sure about the le vieux bit but its sometimes used as a familiar name like old man. Anyway 'dedans' is inside, so there's some repetition of that. owner: for the third time I told you inside! |

1&2) he saw me in Claridges ( a posh hotel in Paris) . HE followed me out and I jumped into a cab. Oh but I know he'll follow me here.

Frenchman - loosely translated : well then, you understand, let's go I can't get any of the hooha but afterwards the tall French guy with the hat says: monsieur on this side then, listen my friends, back to back (and tells Julius en arriere which means get behind) keep your distance. Understand? 10) I can make out: Elmer : don't push me Hat man: it's not like that its done. Julius ...? Just keep your attitude, just keep your attitude. Hat man: Monsieur I beg of you. Down there - understand? 11) you thought you had lost me and you grieved for me 12) oh you murderer! sorry I can't get more of the French in the rabble but I'm not sure you;re even supposed to hear anything distinctive! |

Is that Spanish alone again? 4) 1:17. Tony: “it’s alright ……” Nina: “When we…… And …… in love with each other.” 5) 1:35. Nina: “Oh, you ……” up to “I know, you’ve been with her!” (1:48) 6) 1:48 – 1:55. Is that only Spanish again? 7) From 1:55 to Tony’s “Nina, this is quite enough”. 8) 2:16. Before she throws a knife at him does she cry something like “No, Tony, wait!” or is that Spanish again? |

I'm going to divorce my wife and marry you as soon as possible. This thing you forget? no? him: no no darling of course not but you see, Patricia will not divorce me. 5) Her: oh you can't no? so for two days you say you can't come here. Elmer rushes towards the general: “General! …….” Up to “Would you be interested in an invention?” and then up to “I invented it myself” 6) 1:36. Elmer: “I’ll show it to you”. This scene in French up to the moment we see Elmer and Julius near the bushes. 7) 1:49. Julius: “Listen. …… never pull a gun around here”. 8) 1:55. Hope something is still recognizable. Up to man’s “Place this in his pocket, will you?” 17) 4:52. Julius: “You’re a genius! …… for it!” 18) 5:01. Some greetings in French. 19) 5:29. Nina: “is that …… right here?” (does she use some Spanish word?) 20) 5:43. Nina: “…… after you” (something in Spanish again?) 21) 6:14. Nina: “I see it in your eyes! ……” Is all the rest in Spanish? Except Tony’s “Now listen” and the waiter’s “wait a minute…” (is that possible to hear what the waiter says next? 22) 6:56. Tony: “There never could be anyone but you in my heart”.
