Avatar crosses the $1 billion mark!

It was only a matter of time! According to Variety James Cameron’s Avatar has made over $1 billion worldwide in just 17 days. It is now the 4th highest grossing film ever (not counting inflation) and has overtaken The Dark Knight, with it’s sights set on Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest ($1,066.2) and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King ($1,119.1). From the looks of things James Cameron will have both Titanic and Avatar at the number #1 and #2 spots.

Avatar’s current box office gross in the US stands at $352.1 million after taking in $68.3 million this weekend, and it has made $670.2 million overseas. Looking at the month ahead there doesn’t seem to be any major competition. We have Daybreakers, The Book of Eli, Legion and Mel Gibson’s Edge of Darkness, neither of which pose a major threat, so Avatar could continue to bring in the $$$ well into January.

I'm not too surprised that it's passed the $1bn mark, but I'm very surprised that it's done it so quickly.

Avatar' is No. 2 all-time worldwide

"Avatar" continues to outperform expectations.

Just days ago, execs suggested the Fox-distributed pic was a lock to reach No. 2 on the all-time list of worldwide boxoffice hits by next week.

Incredibly, the forecast proved too conservative.

On Wednesday, "Avatar" passed the $1.12 billion tally by 2003's "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" to become the second-highest worldwide grosser ever. James Cameron's sci-fi epic headed into Thursday with a domestic cume of $374.4 million and a foreign cume of $760.8 million, for wordwide boxoffice totaling $1.14 billion and counting.

Cameron's "Titanic" is the all-time top worldwide grosser, ringing up $1.84 billion in 1997-1998.

"Avatar" -- which has overachieved most dramatically overseas since unspooling mid-December -- now also is poised to hit the top 10 list of all-time top domestic grossers.

On Thursday, the pic will pass No. 10 domestic grosser "Star Wars: Episode III-Revenge of the Sith," which rung up $380.3 in 2005. But by the end of the coming weekend, "Avatar" should climb significantly higher in the ranks of all-time domestic hits.

Avatar still rakes it in, now second only to Titanic

James Cameron's Avatar topped the box office for the fourth straight weekend in a row, taking in an estimated $48.5 million domestically to become the top domestic hit of 2009.

The domestic tally for the sci-fi epic is now $429 million, placing it sixth among domestic hits, the Associated Press reported.

Worldwide, Avatar has now taken in about $1.34 billion, second only to Cameron's Titanic ($1.8 billion).

Daybreakers, meanwhile, opened in fourth place with $15 million for the Jan. 8 weekend.

James Cameron has two films on the top, neither of which have priors.

Avatar sinks Titanic internationally

According to BoxOfficeMojo Titanic is now in second place in the All Time International (non-US) chart with $1,242.1 million while Avatar is now first with $1,283.3 million after taking $107 million this weekend for a 6th consecutive weekend in first place.

On the worldwide front Titanic is still first, barely, $1,842.9 million against the $1,836.1 million for Avatar. That’s just 6.8 million between James Cameron’s latest and the movie that reigned supreme over the box office ocean for the past 12 years, yet another Cameron written and directed picture. What’s even more amazing is Avatar did all of this in just 38 days.

Now keep in mind that the Sunday numbers are just estimates and they might go a few millions down or up.

Finally Avatar finished another weekend in first place in the US with an estimated $36 million for a total of $552.7 million, having past The Dark Knight on Saturday in the All Time US chart for second place. It should bring down Titanic in no more then 10 days in North America and Canada (US box office includes both for those that don’t know).

It's official: Avatar is now the highest-grossing movie EVER

It's official: As expected, James Cameron's Avatar on Monday officially pulled ahead of Cameron's other big movie, about some boat, to become the biggest-grossing movie of ALL TIME.

Twentieth Century Fox said that the sci-fi epic had amassed an estimated global total box office take of $1.8437 billion, just ahead of Titanic's worldwide total of $1,843,201,268, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The worldwide crown isn't adjusted for inflation, and Avatar's high grosses were certainly boosted by higher ticket prices overall and especially for 3-D and IMAX screenings. (Check BoxOfficeMojo for the full list of inflation-adjusted grosses.)

So if you haven't seen Avatar yet, you're the only one.

I'll take issue with Sci-Fi Wire's phrasing. It's the biggest ever in terms of nominal box office, but that doesn't take into account inflation, inflated ticket prices (two different things), and the fact that Avatar is in 3D and IMAX, things not available to most previous films. In terms of actual tickets sold, it's way, way down the list. Even accounting only for inflation, I think it's something like 30th all-time. It's a success, but it's not the biggest film ever by any serious metric.

So, if you haven't seen Avatar yet...well, there are still plenty of others like you.

How many 3-D theatres are outside of North America? What about IMAX? Just wondering.

James Cameron has the two highest grossing films of all-time? This is truly a sad, sad day.

That's a great question; I dunno. Though a full third of its gross is domestic, so it's still a huge factor, and the inflation issue is a far larger part of the total, anyway. It's been quite successful, but there's a reason that a disproportionate number of box office record holders are extremely recent.

Yeah, I agree with him. I can imagine with casual movie goers, Cameron might be the best director ever.

Especially thanks to the publicity and attention handed to him.

I get negative rep for not being a fan of Cameron. More specific not being a fan of Avatar. So he must be doing something right because the herd seems to love him.

True, but then, "the herd" usually end up as hamburgers or jackets, so they get what they deserve in the end. :D
