Remakes

Does remaking old films work or does changing actors change the film? Do they lose the original atmosphere? Does updating a film ruin it where you have someone who looks like he just left school replacing a 40 year old actor in the lead role?

I watched the 2005 remake of The Quatermass Xperiment the other day and it doesn't begin to compare to the original. I can see why they didn't remake the other Quatermass films.

I did like the remake of "The Thing From Another World" (1951). The 1982 remake was well done and followed the basic idea in Campbell's book fairly close which the original didn't.

Re: Remakes

I would say 90% of the time no. You do get exceptions to the rule John Carpenter's The Thing for example. But most of the time, the remake rearly ever tops the original. Especially if that original was good, The Day The Earth Stood Still is a perfect example of that.

I'm sure if the directors or script writers or producers today were actually producing good movies based upon old ones there wouldnt be so much fuss. But as I've said 90% of the time maybe more, the movie is just bad.

But, you usually make money off of remakes so what can you do? And there are more on the way.

unfortunately. That thing that they say , that they make remakes for a new movie audience to discover is complete nonesense. If a movie fan wants to discover good movies he/she will without the help of remakes...most say that the sci-fi or effects driven movies deserve remakes..Why spoil something already original and not come up with a new story?...It seems that most people in today's movie industry lack imagination.

Horrible Remakes:
The texas chainsaw massacre
Helloween
The Fog
The Wickerman
Psycho 98
The day the earth stood stood still
Planet of the apes

I'm sure from all this lack of imagination in todays hollywood we will be looking at remakes of Back To the future, Mad Max and other great movies of the past.
Won't someone makes those money-grabbing whores stop...

Re: Remakes

Remakes are a sham!
Pretty annoyed they are going to be remaking Robocop, Footloose and of course one of my fav's Enter the Dragon....WHY!!!!!!!!
I just think people are lost for ideas so they think hrm well no one has seen a brutal martial art movie for a while lets remake(KILL) a classic.
If they remake Jaws, allllllll hell will break loose!!! I'll be getting up in their grill for that!
