Underrated Actresses

My nominee for underrated actress of the week...Marisa Tomei. Maybe not underrated but under utilized. And without the recognition of other equal or lesser talents. She won an oscar in 92 for My Cousin Vinnie but never really became a marquee star IMO.

I've always been impressed with Tomei's work (she was terrific in In the Bedroom in a supporting role...and received an oscar nom). So my hope is she's given the lead in a quality, successful movie and gets the recognition she deserves.

Miranda Richardson

She is such a cameleon that finding a pic that "looks like her" is a bit of a challenge. She played multiple roles in Spider and I had to check the credits to be sure they were all her. She has 81 films to her acting credit, and not one golden statuette to show for it, but if you mention her to any film-lover, you'll see them swoon.

No Oscar wins yet, but she does have two Academy Award nominations (for Damage and Tom & Viv), plus she's been nominated for just about every other major industry award and won Golden Globes and BAFTAs. So it's not like she's been completely unrecognized.

All true. So what are our criteria for "underrated"?

Me too :yup:

susan 02-25-06 07:22 AM

sandra bullock...she may do fluff, but i think she's a good little actress....

Mrs. Darcy 02-25-06 10:40 AM

I like Bonnie Hunt, she is natural and easy to watch.

Twain 02-26-06 02:27 PM

My next nomination... Maggie Gyllenhaal

TheChaplain 03-14-06 08:21 AM

I have to say and many may disagree but i think Elisha Cuthbert is gonna do some good things. And Kate Beckinsale Deserves more recognition

mack 03-14-06 10:36 PM

Oh please stop! :D Cross Elisha cuthbert off the list. :nope: If Elisha Cuthbert gets an oscar, I will ban myself from movies for a month.

Sandra Bullock? Definitely! she should win something.

Not being the movie buff that some of you are, I have to ask: has Ashley Judd won anything yet? She should have.

1) Elisha Cuthbert is hot as hell
2) U cannot deny that she did a great job in 24 and House of Wax, Thats right i said it House of Wax, it was a great movie because we all saw what we wanted - the end of paris
3) To develop an opinion that shes bad, then u must have seen more than one of her pieces of work to make an informed decision and with the decision you have met i think you should do yourself a favor and ban yourself from movies

Martha Plimpton

Michelle Yeoh
Zhang Ziyi seems to be the flavour of the year from Asia but for me the true female star is Michelle. She does a lot of her own stunts and always gives a performance. 'The' female action star!
In good or bad movies you always remember her.

Travis Bickle 03-16-06 12:18 PM

Jennifer Tilly, don't know what she's done recently.

speedbump 03-16-06 07:54 PM

I'd add Teri Polo to this list...she always come through in her roles. I think Bonnie Hunt is also a good nom.

Tacitus 03-16-06 08:47 PM

Madeline Stowe

Lord knows what went wrong with her career after 12 Monkeys. Everyone plateaus, I guess, but I always liked her as an actor.

Being one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen means that Madeline's not underrated in the looks department though. ;)

Twain 03-17-06 12:18 PM

Two more... Elisabeth Shue and Nancy Travis

I thought Shue would be a major star after Leaving Las Vegas. Didn't happen. What a naturally beautiful face she has.

The same with Nancy Travis after Internal Affairs. She's also very versatile. Sort of a modern Lucille Ball. She can be hot or she can be funny.

:yup:

She always seems to carry with her a certain amount of grace, wisdom, and overall class. I really like that.

Angela Bettis, definitely,

http://www.lequotidienducinema.com/c...critique/3.jpg

for May especially, and also:

Girl Interrupted
her (very) small role in Perfume
Carrie (2002)
Toolbox Murders (well, okay...)
The Last Best Sunday
even Bless The Child
and Sparrow (Storia di una capinera)

(seen them all)

and so looking forward to seeing her movie (as director of) Roman:

1) Your pants are not a reliable indicator of acting talent.
2) Paris ended, therefore it's a good movie? It's a good movie, therefore someone's performance was good in it? You're nutty.
3) You haven't presented a case either way, so you're not in a position to demand one from someone else, let alone be flip about it. If you're going to throw around attitude, make sense first.
4) The word is "you".

Welcome to mofo.
