The Movie Forums Top 100 Comedies Countdown

Welcome to the MOFO top 100 Comedies Countdown. We have had three months to reflect on the comedies we were already familiar with and to watch new films to broaden our horizons. We left the judgment of what is and what is not a comedy up to you, so there was a lot of nominations, 757 to be exact. We also had 89 ballots, which I believe was the 3rd number of all time for MOFO Countdowns. I want to thank Yoda, Citizen Rules, and Thief for their help while I have been learning how to host my first countdown. I especially want to thank Citizen Kane and Yoda for the graphics they created for this countdown. Yoda handled the graphics for the reveals and Citizen did the above graphic for the countdown. Let's reveal some one-pointers.

I don't think this will top Captain Spaulding's list in the other thread, but I'll be following along anyways.

Hopefully he still keeps us entertained at the same time!

Re: The Movie Forum's Top 100 Comedies Countdown

The MoFo tradition is to mention the One Pointers. Those are films that received exactly one point, meaning that a single person had them in their last spot of the ballot (25th), with no votes from anyone else.It is common for people here to use that spot to put the spotlight on a rather obscure film, a "hidden gem", or just a bizarre nomination just for kicks
Be prepared, because we had 42 one-pointers

The Phantom of Liberty
Something's Gotta Give

Red Rocket
Paul
Tickled
Club Dread

Re: The Movie Forum's Top 100 Comedies Countdown

I have just revealed the one-pointers. There is one ballot task I have to take care of before I can start the reveals. I will begin the reveals on Monday. I will attempt to have the reveals posted before 11:00a everyday. If I can't get it done before 11:00a it will be after 6:00p, but I that would be a rare circumstance.

Grass Is Greener was my one pointer. Love that snappy, witty dialogue. Which is sure to be a trend for stuff I like as we go. I thought there was a chance some of our classic lovers might put this one on their list.

Also, Seven Samurai is certainly stretching the spirit of this paper thin. Strozek is a pretty good call though. One of my all time faves and very funny.

Pixar's 1989 short Knick Knack was mine.
Three and half minutes of hilarity and cool music. I love that angry little snowman.

Heavy Trip is mine. It's about an up-and-coming heavy metal band and it's probably my favorite movie of 2018. My favorite character is Pasi, who is always spouting metal trivia and quoting songs like Joe Friday on Dragnet. Metal fans and/or Spinal Tap fans would enjoy it.

Short Cuts was mine. Fantastic film.

Re: The Movie Forum's Top 100 Comedies Countdown

Club Dread was my one-pointer. I wanted it to be higher, but knew no one on this site would vote for it, so here it is on the special list.

I like all the Broken Lizard films, but since I'm a horror fan, this one speaks to me the most. I think it balances the horror and comedy extremely well, has memorable stupid jokes and Bill f*cking Paxton.

Nuff said.

Re: The Movie Forum's Top 100 Comedies Countdown

I have a few that were potential one-pointers, but I just can't help my darn honesty. As usual the list only goes exactly in the order I feel is accurate. Still hoping to see some of my picks here later on!

Yay, no one pointers for me!

Re: The Movie Forum's Top 100 Comedies Countdown

I've seen:

The Phantom of Liberty
Paul
Overboard 1987 (I think so, at least)
Scary Movie 4
Seven Samurai (I don't consider this to be comedy)

mark f 06-17-22 06:13 PM

My one pointer, Ruthless People, is easily one of the best comedies of the '80s (or ever, for that matter). Dale Launer's script is brilliant, and ZAZ directs with much more flair and dexterity than they exhibited in Airplane!. What pushes the film over the top are the great performances from Danny DeVito, Bette Midler, Judge Reinhold, Helen Slater, Bill Pullman, Anita Morris, William G. Schilling, Art Evans and Clarence Felder. Even though the film is consistently funny, the scene where the final ransom dropoff occurs may rank as the funniest scene in screen history. If you don't start to choke from laughter during that scene, then get a new sense of humor. (I hope it's not necessary.)
