Song Tournament 31
Having a tough day, doing this to maybe cheer myself up.
https://www.movieforums.com/communit...chmentid=49646 You know the swing of things by now...pick 8 songs, anything you like just as long as it's under 10min long and not a previous winner, and I'll throw it all at random.org and we vote as we like. |
Re: Song Tournament 31
It's whatever it is! Mine might look a little hard to gauge. I have no idea how long it will take to get participants, so I will accept all changes made until we start. :D

|
That's sad. Was looking forward to yours. I'd even played that Filter before. Great song. :(
I'll keep it open another 24 hours then start. |
Sorry to trouble everyone, but leave/adjust your noms for a while.
I can't quite start it yet. As I feel like I want to die. So if it's ok with everyone just quitely gather abd tweak as time goes on. It shouldn't take TOO long. A couple of days. |

Re: Song Tournament 31
Ok, enough of me feeling sorry for myself. Change of face, on with race.
Shall we say we begin this shindig torroe evening my time (GMT+1). Around 6 ish. I'm working tomorrow so this would happen after that. |
Re: Song Tournament 31
I'm changing the amount of nominations to 10 each. I'm not sure we'll have that many players, so whaddaysay folks? 10 a piece?

Re: Song Tournament 31
Scorpions - Holiday vs The Glorious Sons - Heavy - The second was a little too country for my taste...
Fats Domino - Blueberry Hill vs Filter - Hey Man, Nice Shot The one Filter track I like... The Steel Woods - Straw in the Wind vs The Pretty Reckless - Take Me Down Was just complaining about country a couple of selections up, but The Steel Woods track is actually pretty good. I still like the Taylor Momsen track more, though. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Keep a Little Soul vs The Alan Parsons Project - I Wouldn't Want to be Like You I can't abide Tom Petty. I also happen to like The Alan Parsons Project a whole lot. Easy choice. Tom Petty - Cabin Down Below vs Rotting Christ - Devadevam Tom Petty again? Vs. metal? Another easy choice. |
ROUND 1 DAY 1
Scorpions - Holiday vs The Glorious Sons - Heavy (I'm a fan of The Scorpions, but a lot of their ballads blur together. The Glorious Sons, despite being Canadian, sound like authentic southern rock.) Fats Domino - Blueberry Hill vs Filter - Hey Man, Nice Shot ("Blueberry Hill" is an all-time great song, but "Hey Man, Nice Shot" always provides me with a nice kick in the ass, and that alternative aggression better suits my mood at the moment.) The Steel Woods - Straw in the Wind vs The Pretty Reckless - Take Me Down (I've liked most of the songs I've heard from The Pretty Reckless, and this song is no exception, but as with everything else I've heard from them, their sound is a bit too generic for me to call it anything but decent. Love the lyrics and Skynyrd-inspired sound of "Straw in the Wind.") Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Keep a Little Soul vs The Alan Parsons Project - I Wouldn't Want to be Like You (Love Petty, but the funkiness of the second song was a welcome change of pace at this point in the set.) Tom Petty - Cabin Down Below vs Rotting Christ - Devadevam (Nothing against Petty, since I like "Cabin Down Below" and those cool guitar licks, but I'm weirdly into the Rotting Christ song with its heavy, trance-like, meditative quality. I picture Hindu monks rocking out to this song.) |

Re: Song Tournament 31
I'll vote when I get home in about 3 hours
|
ROUND 1 DAY 1
Scorpions - Holiday vs The Glorious Sons - Heavy Tough one - I liked both. Going with the one I haven't heard before. Fats Domino - Blueberry Hill vs Filter - Hey Man, Nice Shot Easy one for me as I've nominated that Filter song before. It's a great song. The Fats Domino one is ok...I've never been the biggest fan of it. The Steel Woods - Straw in the Wind vs The Pretty Reckless - Take Me Down Another tough one, as I quite like The Pretty Reckless. Not enough to get any of their albums but I think they're quite good. The Steel Woods is new to me, too...liked it a tad better. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Keep a Little Soul vs The Alan Parsons Project - I Wouldn't Want to be Like You Easy vote for me as I'm not a fan of Tom Petty, but I've always liked The Alan Parsons Project. My dad played a lot of them when I was growing up, so it's kind of comfort music for me. Tom Petty - Cabin Down Below vs Rotting Christ - Devadevam Easiest vote of the round for me. ****ing loooooove Rotting Christ. Of corpse. |
Scorpions - Holiday vs The Glorious Sons - Heavy - Vote for the second cause The Sopranos reference. Not a big fan of Scorpions or really the second song, but the second song is more my style.
Fats Domino - Blueberry Hill vs Filter - Hey Man, Nice Shot - I dig the second song. I just watched the video Dwyer's suicide.... Jesus Christ. I'll vote for the first song because there is a little bit of sentimental value attached to it for me, and it is an all-time classic. I look forward to voting for whoever wins in the upcoming rounds. The Steel Woods - Straw in the Wind vs The Pretty Reckless - Take Me Down - Holy sh*t. The first song is exactly my style... let me guess, Captain Spaulding nominated this? The Pretty Reckless don't seem too bad, but it would take a monster song to outdo this first-time listening to its competition. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Keep a Little Soul vs The Alan Parsons Project - I Wouldn't Want to be Like You - I've always been aware of The Alan Parsons Project, but I've never pulled the deep dive. This song is straight funk, I dig it. Petty, on the other hand, I've always been lukewarm on. Tom Petty - Cabin Down Below vs Rotting Christ - Devadevam - I didn't know what to expect from a band called Rotting Christ, but I am getting some Carcosa vibes. Once again, lukewarm to the late Petty. Top Five Songs from this Set 1. Straw in the Wind 2. I Wouldn't Want to be Like You 3. Blueberry Hill 4. Hey Man, Nice Shot 5. Devadevam |

ROUND 1 DAY 2
https://i.imgur.com/v54GdhT.gif Nicole Atkins - A Little Crazy vs The Folksmen - Start Me Up Amorphis - I of Crimson Blood) vs Hacride - Perturbed Taylor Swift - Shake It Off vs Moloko - Forever More Planet of Zeus - Them Nights vs Coheed & Cambria - The Afterman Chic - I Want Your Love vs Maroon 5 (ft. Cardi B) - Girls Like You |
Re: Song Tournament 31
That first set was brutal. Three out of five of those matches had my noms and they all lost. Ouch.
|
Re: Song Tournament 31
Nicole Atkins - A Little Crazy vs The Folksmen - Start Me Up - Eeek! Neither of these is my cup of tea AT ALL. Went with the first one.
Amorphis - I of Crimson Blood vs Hacride - Perturbed - Wasn't feeling the second track. Vocal was a little to metal core for my taste. The first track is on one of my favorite albums of all time. Taylor Swift - Shake It Off vs Moloko - Forever More I have heard Tay Swift songs I have liked, but this isn't one of them. Second track had a good dance beat, at least... Planet of Zeus - Them Nights vs Coheed & Cambria - The Afterman - First track sort of reminded me of old Corrosion of Conformity - I liked it well enough. Love Coheed and Cambria, though, and The Afterman is such a great song; it's one of my wife's favorite songs ever! Chic - I Want Your Love vs Maroon 5 (ft. Cardi B) - Girls Like You - Went with the funk. I also really liked the concept of the Maroon 5 video, but man, Cardi B just rubs me the wrong way. |
ROUND 1 DAY 2
Nicole Atkins - A Little Crazy vs The Folksmen - Start Me Up I don't care for most female voices. Atkins is not an exception. Also I love A Mighty Wind. Amorphis - I of Crimson Blood vs Hacride - Perturbed I hated both of these, but the first is marginally less grating. Taylor Swift - Shake It Off vs Moloko - Forever More The second one gets my vote on account of not being Taylor Swift. Planet of Zeus - Them Nights vs Coheed & Cambria - The Afterman I didn't care for either of these, but really didn't like the vocal in the second one. Chic - I Want Your Love vs Maroon 5 (ft. Cardi B) - Girls Like You Adam Levine bugs. |
Re: Song Tournament 31
Nicole Atkins - A Little Crazy vs The Folksmen - Start Me Up - I recognized the Nicole Atkins name; it kept bugging me that I couldn't put a face or voice to it, but as soon as I clicked on the link it all came rushing back. She's got a powerful voice and reminds me of Patsy Cline a bit. I'd still Patsy over her, but Nicole ain't bad. The crazy white boys in the second one are interesting enough.
Amorphis - I of Crimson Blood) vs Hacride - Perturbed - I don't really have strong feelings about this match-up. The second one I was enjoying despite thinking that I really shouldn't be enjoying it because it's not really the type of metal I gravitate towards... so that's sort of a compliment. Taylor Swift - Shake It Off vs Moloko - Forever More - Charli XCX has a pretty dope cover of "Shake It Off". This is an easy choice. Planet of Zeus - Them Nights vs Coheed & Cambria - The Afterman - I dig the music in the first track a lot, the vocals and lyrics don't seem to be pushing my buttons. I've always kinda been like "Coheed & Cambria? I guess they are cool or whatever." Pretty much still feel like that. Chic - I Want Your Love vs Maroon 5 (ft. Cardi B) - Girls Like You - I am fascinated by Cardi B, she is so likable. I just don't know what to make of her music yet, and even if I find that it isn't great, I don't want to call it bad. I don't want to speak ill of her, she's adorable. Maroon 5 on the other hand... |
ROUND 1 DAY 2
Nicole Atkins - A Little Crazy vs The Folksmen - Start Me Up (Whether you like country or not, I'd hope that people can appreciate the great vocal on "A Little Crazy." JJ's Patsy Cline comparison is spot-on. The goofy, folk parody of The Rolling Stones' "Start It Up" is okay, but not something I'd want to hear again.) Amorphis - I of Crimson Blood vs Hacride - Perturbed (Found the first track generic and forgettable. It's not bad, but nothing about it distinguishes itself from other similar sounding metal songs. Don't love "Perturbed," but I admire its energy and aggression. Bonus points for getting to see boobs in the music video.) Taylor Swift - Shake It Off vs Moloko - Forever More (I despise Taylor Swift. Seeing that this video has almost 3 billion views makes me want to press the "launch" button on my personal set of nukes. "Forever More"' was alright. For a dance track, it didn't make me want to move, but it could've been five minutes of someone making fart noises with their armpit and I still would've voted for it over the black hole of musical talent that is Taylor Swift.) Planet of Zeus - Them Nights vs Coheed & Cambria - The Afterman (I've tried unsuccessfully to get into Coheed & Cambria in the past. Kept hoping "The Afterman" would kick into a second gear but it never happened. "Them Nights" has a really cool groove and I like how it builds. It's a song I keep returning to, even though it flirts with a level of quality it never quite reaches.) Chic - I Want Your Love vs Maroon 5 (ft. Cardi B) - Girls Like You (Not going to lie, I found the second song extremely catchy.) |

I knew you'd hate the metal but it was only one song from my list that's metal. French metal, which probably doesn't even count. |

Yeah, I try not to **** on peoples' noms as it's all stuff they like so I try to be nice about the stuff I really recoil to. |

Yeah, I try not to **** on peoples' noms as it's all stuff they like so I try to be nice about the stuff I really recoil to. Still, it would feel wrong to me to not nominate him. Round 1 Day 2
Nicole Atkins - A Little Crazy vs The Folksmen - Start Me Up I hadn't heard either before, and while I did smile at the second one (I like it if bands are going to do cover versions, that they do it in their own style), the first was quite lovely and I couldn't resist it. Amorphis - I of Crimson Blood) vs Hacride - Perturbed  Sedai's going to temp ban me, but I did confess to not really being a fan of Amorphis. This wasn't a bad track though. I just like the tech brutality of Perturbed. It's quite intense. I'm attracted to intense music, movies, people, animals... Taylor Swift - Shake It Off vs Moloko - Forever More Easy vote for me, really not a Taylor Swift type. Róisín Murphy, however...I'd kiss her. Planet of Zeus - Them Nights vs Coheed & Cambria - The Afterman The first was pretty good, and I've never been a Coheed & Cambria fan. :shifty: Chic - I Want Your Love vs Maroon 5 (ft. Cardi B) - Girls Like You Maroon 5... |

ROUND 1 DAY 3
Quincy Jones - Razzamatazz vs José González - Slow Moves This is catchy, I like it. The other one is too slow. I like slow songs, but usually I need to have some connection to the artist first. This doesn't work for me as an introduction to Gonzalez. J.S. Ondara - Lebanon vs Waylon Jennings - Clyde I really liked the Waylon song and probably would have voted for it against any of the other songs in this set. But I am in love with Ondara's voice. I saw him in concert last month when he opened for Lindsey Buckingham. Instant fan. Fleetwood Mac - The Chain vs Lazy Eye - Silversun Pickups I was hoping to like the other song because I don't want to vote for Fleetwood Mac. I really, really don't. I'm so angry with them. But I didn't like the other song (ugh that voice) and the combination of Buckingham's vocals and guitar and John McVie's killer bass line won't let me give the other even a protest vote. Kennelklubben - Höghusmiljonär vs Elton John - I Want Love In order for me to enjoy a song that isn't in English, there has to be something that really stands out about the music and I found this very forgettable. "I Want Love" isn't on my list of favorite Elton songs, but I do like it. Gin Wigmore - Hey Ho vs Metallica - Nothing Else Matters I am by no means a Metallica fan, but I hated Wigmore's voice. |
Re: Song Tournament 31
Quincy Jones - Razzamatazz vs José González - Slow Moves - Bad luck for Jose, who ends up against Mr. Jones.
J.S. Ondara - Lebanon vs Waylon Jennings - Clyde I liked both of these songs, believe it or not. As much a tend to not like country, Waylon is just too cool to not vote for. Tough choice, really. Fleetwood Mac - The Chain vs Lazy Eye - Silversun Pickups - Love Fleetwood Mac! Even though Stevie's vibrato is annoying sometimes, the band's writing on this one is just too good to ignore. This is a classic track. Kennelklubben - Höghusmiljonär vs Elton John - I Want Love - Dammit! I listened to the Kennelklubben track again. Now it is stuck in my head, and may be there for days. One of the catchiest songs I have heard in a long time. Not a big Elton fan, although he is clearly talented, and I do like some of his music. Gin Wigmore - Hey Ho vs Metallica - Nothing Else Matters - Sick of that Metallica track. Voting for the slick song sung by the blonde with a giant gun. I really dig it quite a bit, actually. |
Round 1 Day 3
Quincy Jones - Razzamatazz vs José González - Slow Moves Love that Quincy Jones song. Patti Autin omg. José's introspective style gets a bit crushed in the match-up. J.S. Ondara - Lebanon vs Waylon Jennings - Clyde I have a bit of a hard time with country, but that Waylon Jennings song wasn't bad! I just preferred the first one. Fleetwood Mac - The Chain vs Lazy Eye - Silversun Pickups Quite tough. I think that's probably Fleetwood Mac's best song. Also liked the indie vibe with the second. Kennelklubben - Höghusmiljonär vs Elton John - I Want Love Haha, wasn't expecting that! Reminded me of Kent. Gin Wigmore - Hey Ho vs Metallica - Nothing Else Matters Not a Metallica fan, but their early years are their best. I've heard that song too many times, though and Gin Wigmore was new...she sounds a bit like Duffy. |
ROUND 1 - DAY 3
Quincy Jones - Razzamatazz vs José González - Slow Moves ("Slow Moves" isn't a bad listen, but it comes across way too sleepy when listening to it on the heels of such a vibrant, catchy track as "Razzamatazz.") J.S. Ondara - Lebanon vs Waylon Jennings - Clyde (Waylon is one of my favorite country artists, but I'm very impressed by the soulfulness of Ondara's voice.) Fleetwood Mac - The Chain vs Lazy Eye - Silversun Pickups (I like "The Chain" and a few other Fleetwood songs, but not enough to consider myself a fan. I wish the singer for Silversun Pickups didn't sound so much like a eunuch, but I like their Smashing Pumpkins-style sound.) Kennelklubben - Höghusmiljonär vs Elton John - I Want Love (That's a solid Elton John track, although the video didn't do it any favors since I've grown to hate RDJ. I also like the song I can't pronounce, but I feel like I need to be in a foreign club with strobe lights in order to fully enjoy it.) Gin Wigmore - Hey Ho vs Metallica - Nothing Else Matters (I'm sure I'd hear "Nothing Else Matters" within 30 minutes of switching the radio to any rock station, and I don't join these song tournaments to hear such played-out songs. One of the YouTube comments mentioned that "Hey Ho" has a James Bond quality to it, and I agree. I love the dangerous, sexy quality to the song/video, as well as Wigmore's voice (which does indeed sound a lot like Duffy, but I love Duffy's voice as well)). |
Re: Song Tournament 31
I'd pay to hear @Captain Spaulding trying to pronounce Höghusmiljonär.

Re: Song Tournament 31
I'd be curious to see a translation of the Kennelklubben track. Alas, for now, I will just be content to listen to it another 16 times.

@TheUsualSuspect, you only need to break the ties between the last two match-ups:

Re: Song Tournament 31
Looks like I finally have one going on to round 2. :)
I'll have to vote on today's set later. Unless I'm just not recognizing the titles, I'm not familiar with any of these songs and will have to dedicate some time to listening to them. |

Re: Song Tournament 31
Pusha T - Santeria vs This Isn't Our Parade - Santigold Liked the more spacey vibe of the second track. First dude was a good rapper, but the music wasn't my cuppa.
Wintersun - Snow & Sorrow vs Motorpsycho - Every Dream Home - I am a huge Wintersun nut, but this was a harder choice than I thought it would be. Liked the second track a whole lot, but it kind of lost me after a while. Cool retro vibe, though. Pretty sure Wintersun doesn't have a shot here, but I will give them my vote regardless. Come Pick Me Up - Ryan Adams vs Flatlinerz - Satanic Verses - Not a big fan of either, TBH. Went with the chill blues track. Margo Price - Hands of Time vs Enigma - Sadeness - The second video was super quiet, so I had to search out a louder one. Meanwhile, I love me some Enigma! Brings me back to some good times in the early 90s with friends. :) About Today - The National vs Kids See Ghosts - Freeee (Ghost Town, Pt. 2) - Digging the mood of the first track this morning. |
ROUND 1 DAY 4
Pusha T - Santeria vs This Isn't Our Parade - Santigold I didn't care for either of these but at least I didn't find this one grating. Wintersun - Snow & Sorrow vs Motorpsycho - Every Dream Home Ugh. 16.5 minutes of listening just to decide one match. Not overly fond of either but this one's closer to my tastes. Come Pick Me Up - Ryan Adams vs Flatlinerz - Satanic Verses I liked the harmonica parts at least. Margo Price - Hands of Time vs Enigma - Sadeness I didn't like Price's voice and Enigma has the benefit of nostalgia. I completely forgot about that song until I heard it again just now. About Today - The National vs Kids See Ghosts - Freeee (Ghost Town, Pt. 2) That repeated drawl on the word "free" was irritating, but otherwise I liked this. Surprising. |

ROUND 1 - DAY 4
Pusha T - Santeria vs This Isn't Our Parade - Santigold (I try to be open-minded toward all types of music, but I admittedly struggle with a lot of rap and hip-hop. Maybe that's just because my friends listen to a lot of sh*t rap, because I actually really like "Santeria." I was disappointed that the song was so short. Those Spanish parts are indeed en fuego. The second song was a pleasant listen, but it got repetitive pretty fast.) Wintersun - Snow & Sorrow vs Motorpsycho - Every Dream Home (I like how the instrumentation of "Snow & Sorrow" evokes wintry imagery even before the lyrics kick in, but in the battle of 8+ minute songs, "Every Dream Home" did a better job of maintaining my interest with its multiple transitions.) Come Pick Me Up - Ryan Adams vs Flatlinerz - Satanic Verses (I was just saying that I struggle with rap, but "Satanic Verses" is the type of weird, creative, darkly comic, macabre sh*t I gravitate toward, regardless of genre. Meanwhile, Ryan Adams has a voice that makes me want to punch my speakers.) Margo Price - Hands of Time vs Enigma - Sadeness ("Hands of Time" is just great songwriting. People sh*t on country, but no other genre of music features better storytelling. Margo Price is a recent discovery for me, but I've already heard enough to declare her one of the best modern country artists. She's got some Loretta Lynn in her. The Enigma song ain't bad, but it really only works for me if I'm sitting in a church pew seeing flashbacks of my slaughtered family before I head off to face their killer and his henchmen in a John Woo-style shootout with doves and sh*t.) About Today - The National vs Kids See Ghosts - Freeee (Ghost Town, Pt. 2) (I groaned when I saw Kanye's name on the second track. "Freeee" is certainly more sonically interesting than the first song, and if I was high right now I could possibly get into its spaced-out sound, but I'm not, so instead I just found the song a little obnoxious. "About Today" is perhaps too simplistic, but it succeeded in depressing me, and I think that was the point.) |
Round 1 Day 4
Pusha T - Santeria vs This Isn't Our Parade - Santigold Rap's kind of winning me over as of late, depending on its style, so I'm always on the lookout for something in that vein that I'd love. Liked this quite a bit, would be happy to hear it again. The second wasn't bad, it mainly just suffered from my flirtation with rap right now... Wintersun - Snow & Sorrow vs Motorpsycho - Every Dream Home Not an easy vote, but Motorpsycho take it for me. I didn't realise I picked a log-ish long song from them (they never seem that long to me because I love their ****), I just picked the one I couldn't get out of my head at the time. They write ridiculously catchy riffs. In my top 5 bands, easily. Come Pick Me Up - Ryan Adams vs Flatlinerz - Satanic Verses Straight up loved that Flatlinerz. Margo Price - Hands of Time vs Enigma - Sadeness Difficult one as I liked Margo Price's voice but not so much the song. And yaaaas SANDRA! She may never be Maria Magdalena but the bitch slaaaaays as the voice of Enigma. About Today - The National vs Kids See Ghosts - Freeee (Ghost Town, Pt. 2) Trippy rap/hip hop is my favourite kind in the genre. |
Re: Song Tournament 31
If y'all can have patience with me, I'll vote sometime tomorrow evening. Had some busy life stuff happen yesterday and a major project due tomorrow. If you need to move on or my votes won't change anything that's fine too.
